SUPERFOOD: Tumeric

Why is Turmeric good for the body?
Turmeric contains bioactive compounds like curcumin that act as potent anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant agents, helping protect the body from oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, which are linked to many diseases.

Research suggests curcumin may support heart health by helping protect blood vessel function and lowering factors tied to heart disease. Curcumin has also been studied as a beneficial herb in cancer treatment and has been found to affect cancer growth and development.

Beyond these benefits, turmeric’s compounds may support brain health, joint comfort, immune function, and overall wellbeing, making it a valuable addition to meals, teas, or daily dishes as part of a nutrient‑rich diet.

Which of these ways do you use turmeric in your daily diet?

Earlier this week, the Managing Director of MedServe Dr. Tolulope Adewole, alongside two members of the team, paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, to brief him on Phase 1 of the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) Oncology Initiative.
The briefing focused on the progress recorded under Phase 1, as preparations begin for the formal handover of the project to the Ministry.
As part of Phase 1, three oncology centres University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBNTH), University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), and Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina (FTHK) were successfully commissioned in 2025.
Key achievements in Phase 1 of this project include:
- Procurement and installation of radiotherapy systems
- Upgrading of radiotherapy facilities
- Workforce training and capacity development
- Regulatory approvals and compliance clearances
- Clinical commissioning and service readiness

With these milestones successfully achieved, Phase 1 of the project is now ready for handover to the Ministry, marking an important step towards formalising ownership and ensuring the continuity and sustainability of oncology services across the commissioned centres.

This milestone underscores MedServe’s continued commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and improving access to quality cancer care in Nigeria.
