I called a new mum to congratulate her on the arrival of her baby. I asked how the baby was, she said the baby is so quiet and has been sleeping. He slept for 8 hours and they were glad he was such a gentle child.
I screamed!
That child was obviously hypoglycaemic.
Over 8 hours after birth and the lil one had not been fed because the mother is not lactating...
I am a baby friendly nurse but I value the baby's brain and future more than 1 or 2 days of formula feeds.
I was frantic but everyone thought I was crazy; 'what is the big deal?'
A newborn should be fed within 30minutes- 1 hour of birth.
Not doing this may lead to hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) which may cause irreversible damage to the developing brain.
Please insist that your baby be fed at the hospital shortly after delivery, to avoid stories.
