NYSC TO UNVEIL NEW PROTOCOLS FOR CORPS MEMBERS WITH DISABILITIES

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is to adopt a standardized protocol for the handling of Corps Members with disabilities during the Orientation Course and throughout the service year.

The Director-General (DG) Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made this known today in his keynote address at the 2026 Batch 'A' Pre-Orientation Workshop, themed "Revamping the NYSC Orientation Course Experience as a Foundation for Impactful Service by Corps Members," which took place in Jos, Plateau State.

He said the initiative, which was in furtherance of the Scheme's welfare strategies for Corps Members, would focus not only on compliance, but also dignity, inclusion and equal opportunity.

"It underscores our commitment to leaving no one behind and positioning the NYSC as a humane, progressive, and nationally responsive institution.

"Equally crucial is using emotional intelligence and showing empathy in all interactions with Corps Members and Camp officials," he added.

General Nafiu stressed that the Orientation Course, being the bedrock of a successful service year, must continuously reflect national realities, global best practices and the dynamics of youth behaviour.

He said the course must ensure relevance as well as quality and measurable outcomes that would enable the Corps Members to integrate seamlessly into their host communities and transit into productive and impactful lives beyond national service.

"It is in this context that the Pre-Orientation Workshop becomes essential because it will analyze emerging challenges, and develop practical improvements that will genuinely enhance the National Service experiences and effectively address modern realities," he said.

The DG commended all NYSC officials and those of the partner agencies for their teamwork, which enabled the Scheme to record tremendous successes in previous Orientation exercises.

General Nafiu charged the workshop participants to come up with ideas that would impact the Corps Members with innovative ideas, operational efficiency and institutional intelligence while also ensuring better Camp management and robust stakeholders' engagement.

"We expect technology-driven engagements and innovative contributions to transform the Orientation Course into a dynamic launchpad for transformative National Service that would prepare Corps Members not just to serve, but to lead, innovate, and make significant impact on national development," he said.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Nura Umar, said the theme of the workshop was strategic as it would showcase the importance of the Orientation Course in shaping the mindset, conduct, and overall experience of the Corps Members.

The Director said the Orientation Course would instill discipline, patriotism and other core values of the NYSC in the Corps Members.

He said the workshop would review the conduct of the previous Orientation Exercise, identify operational challenges and strengthen inter-agency collaboration with a view to offering best services in Camp.

📢HOW TO ESCAPE NYSC CAMP TROUBLE AS A CORPER📢:

For NYSC Orientation Camp, the key to escaping camp palava (trouble) is discipline, smart behavior, and knowing how camp works.

Here are practical tips many corpers use 👇
🧠 1. Know Camp Rules & Respect Them:
Most camp issues come from disobeying simple rules.
Always attend morning drills, parades, and lectures
Don’t skip activities unless you’re officially excused
Avoid restricted areas
👉 Even if others break rules, don’t follow blindly.

🗣️ 2. Be Careful How You Talk to Soldiers & Officials:
Don’t argue with soldiers or camp officials
Answer politely and briefly
Avoid sarcasm or rude jokes
💡 Silence + respect can save you punishment.

⏰ 3. Be Time-Conscious:
Always be early for parades and activities
Latecomers usually face:
Frog jumps
Sun punishment
Extra drills
Set alarms and move early.

👕 4. Dress Properly & Corporately:
Wear complete NYSC kits when required.
No slippers during parade,
No modified uniforms (cut shorts, tight shirts, etc.)
Uniform issues = instant palava.

🤝 5. Choose Friends Wisely:
Avoid stubborn or trouble-loving groups
Don’t follow people sneaking out or forming secret plans
Stay with disciplined corpers
Bad company = shared punishment.

😌 6. Stay Low-Key:
Don’t form boss attitude
Don’t show off money or gadgets
Avoid unnecessary arguments
Camp favors calm and humble corpers.

🏃7. If You’re Not Strong, Be Smart:
If drills are hard for you:
Try your best (effort matters).
Don’t pretend to be sick unless truly unwell.
If you have a genuine health issue, report early to the clinic around the Camp.

📱8. Use Phone Wisely:
Don’t use phone during parade or lectures.
Avoid taking unauthorized photos/videos
Keep phone safe to avoid theft drama.

🙏 9. Religious & Social Activities Help:
Join religious groups or Community Development Scheme (CDS).
It keeps you occupied and out of trouble,
Officials tend to respect committed corpers.

🔑 Golden Rule:
Do your best, obey

📢WHAT YOU NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT DIRECT POSTING AND REDEPLOYMENT📢:

In NYSC, Direct Posting and Relocation are two different ways a Corps member gets posted to a state or place of primary assignment (PPA).

Here’s the clear difference 👇
1. Direct Posting:
Direct Posting means NYSC posts you straight to a specific state (often your state of choice) without needing relocation.

Key Points:
Happens automatically during posting.
Usually based on:
Health reasons (medical reports)
Marital status (married women posted close to husband).
Special considerations by NYSC
You go to camp in the posted state directly.
No extra application or payment needed.

✅ Example:
You selected Oyo State, and NYSC posts you to Oyo State directly.

2. Relocation/Redeployment:

Relocation is when you are initially posted to a state, but you apply to change that state after reporting to camp due to health status or inconvenience.

Key Points:
Done after arriving at camp.
Requires official application on the NYSC portal.

Reasons Accepted:
Health challenges (medical proof required)
Marital reasons
Security reasons
Usually takes 2–4 weeks (can vary for approval).
After approval, you move to a new state.
❌ Not automatic — you must apply.

👉 Direct Posting is safer, time conscious, stress free and before posting, you've know your fate. It happens before going to Camp.

👉 Relocation is not always guaranteed, it's (50/50) due to competition among Corps members and very expensive.

Relocation is a backup option if you’re not posted where you want.
It's happens after camp, stressful and takes time for approval.
