Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) are expanding rapidly across Africa. In many countries, significant investments have been made to move facilities away from paper-based systems.
✅ In some countries like Kenya, facility-level EMR adoption has been reported in the range between 24–46%, depending on facility type and level of care.
✅ In Nigeria, clinicians use of EMRs remains relatively low, estimated between 18–23% of healthcare providers.

The progression often looks like this:
✅ Paper-based systems: limited data use, minimal interoperability
✅ Digitisation: converting paper records into electronic formats
✅ Digitalisation: using digital tools to improve existing workflows
✅ Digital transformation: fundamentally redesigning how care is delivered

In many settings in Africa, EMR implementation has largely concentrated on digitisation. While this is an essential foundational step, it is also at this stage that the greatest opportunities for meaningful innovation begin to emerge.

Healthtech founders, innovators, product designers, and system leaders should be thinking about:

✅ Interoperability layers that connect fragmented systems.
✅ Clinical decision-support tools embedded within EMRs
✅ AI-driven analytics for disease surveillance and outbreak prediction
✅ Supply chain visibility integrated with patient-level data
✅ Financing and insurance models powered by real-time utilisation data
✅ Patient-facing tools that extend records beyond facilities

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a global chain reaction, accelerating experimentation and adoption of digital health solutions.
In 2026, digital health is moving beyond opportunity and experimentation toward a cohesive ecosystem and healthcare infrastructure.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔
1️⃣ Artificial Intelligence as System Support: In 2026, AI will be embedded within clinical workflows, diagnostic support, administrative processes, and predictive risk modelling. This is quite important in the African context.

2️⃣ The Hybrid Care Model: An integrated model in which digital and physical services reinforce each other. In practice, this could mean remote triage supported by local facility follow-up. It could mean virtual specialist consultations linked to diagnostics performed at district hospitals.

3️⃣ From Pilot Projects to Sustainable Models: As digital health matures globally, the emphasis is shifting from pilot programs to sustainable business models. Solutions will increasingly be evaluated on their integration with health financing systems, interoperability with existing platforms, and measurable impact on outcomes.

4️⃣ Digital Health and Public Health Integration: Perhaps the most important lesson moving toward 2026 is that digital health cannot operate in isolation from public health systems. This will be in the form of Integrated dashboards, real-time analytics, and community-level reporting mechanisms.

Several African health-tech startups have shut down in recent years. Each story is different but together, they offer sobering lessons for innovators building in complex health systems.

✅ ConnectMed tackled telemedicine access but ecosystem readiness and adoption lagged.

✅Medsaf addressed pharmaceutical supply chains but funding continuity became its bottleneck.

✅Redbird raised over $2.5M to digitise diagnostics but couldn’t secure follow-on capital in a tightening market.

✅ 54gene raised over $45M to transform African genomics yet governance, burn rate, and financial pressures led to its wind-down.

In health tech, a strong problem statement and initial funding are not enough. Even a bold, globally relevant vision is not enough.

What determines survival?
1️⃣Ecosystem readiness
2️⃣Clear revenue pathways
3️⃣Financial discipline
4️⃣Governance maturity
5️⃣Realistic timelines for scale
6️⃣Sustainable follow-on funding strategy

Digital Ecosystems in Health Care

Healthcare continues to lag behind most industries in leveraging digital technology, despite massive growth in data, devices, and digital health tools.

A digital health ecosystem is a connected, interoperable network of data, tools, providers, patients, and technology partners working together to deliver better care.

The value of a digital health ecosystem
✅ Enables health systems to tap into global innovation—selecting best-fit digital solutions through open platforms rather than building everything in-house.
✅ Supports operational excellence, deeper clinical insights, and improved patient experiences.

Key takeaways for innovators
✅ Build for connection, not isolation. Interoperable systems unlock far more value than standalone products.
✅ Focus on patient-centred outcomes. Integration should improve real clinical decisions, not just generate more data.
✅ Ecosystems are co-created. Success depends on collaboration between healthcare leaders, technologists, and third-party innovators, backed by clear evidence of clinical value.

✅Solutions focused on health supply chains and virtual or hybrid care models continue to lead. This likely reflects persistent system challenges around access, continuity of care, and service delivery.

✅For health startup founders and innovators, this offers a useful reference point. Areas gaining momentum tend to be those addressing operational bottlenecks and everyday realities within health systems, rather than purely novel or experimental ideas.

✅ Other domains such as diagnostics, medical devices, financing, and EMRs remain important, but may require stronger alignment with implementation pathways and health system priorities to achieve scale.

Primary health care is where most people first interact with the health system and it is where simple, well-designed digital tools can make the biggest difference.

As innovators, builders, and problem-solvers, these pillars are opportunities to design tools that work in low-resource settings, scale sustainably, and strengthen everyday care.

Which pillar are you building for?
