There's no talking about my interest and love for plants without mentioning my grandparents- who are still alive by the way!- who own a plot of herbal garden with the rarest species of plants you can ever find!

My first encounter with Black seed or black cumin(amongst many other names) was when my grandmother was diagnosed with Diabetes a few years back.
She was put on meds and her diet was changed but she kept losing weight, looking pale and went from strong to weak in 5 minutes, this became a source of worry so I spoke to a friend of mine who survived cancer using natural plants and she referred me to the almighty BLACK SEED!

I was amazed at the wonders of what I heard that I sought to do a research to get the right doses for administration (I didn't want to send her to a not so early grave. Lol.)
I found out that this is indeed a seed from a miracle plant!

I'm glad to say today that my grandmother is Hale and hearty!! (She'll be 97 this year) and the doctor certified her free from diabetes after the administration of black seed powder amongst other things that ill be sharing with you in subsequent posts this week!

Haircare tip for transitioners

Oil Method
Step 1
Massage a quarter-sized amount of pure coconut oil into your scalp and onto the new hair growth after you shampoo and while the hair is still damp. This will add moisture and soften the new hair growth so it will loosen its curls.
Step 2
Pour olive oil into a sq**rt applicator bottle (the kind that is used to apply hair dye) using a funnel.
Step 3
Part your hair with the applicator bottle by drawing a line down your hair with the bottle tip. Gently squeeze the bottle to apply a light amount of olive oil in a faint line down the part, as you drag the bottle tip through. Repeat on your whole head.

Step 4
Gently comb the oils through your hair with a wide-toothed comb. Put your hair in a protective style such as a bun or braids. This style will give support to the brittle and easily-broken line of demarcation where the relaxed hair ends and the new growth starts. The longer your hair grows, the more stress is put on that line.
Conditioner Method
Step 1
Wet hair and shampoo as usual. Towel dry hair very gently, patting it dry, not rubbing.
Step 2
Apply a deep conditioning treatment following the directions on the bottle. This should be done once a week. Wrap your hair in a towel to keep it warm and from dripping on you.
Step 3
After 10 minutes (or the amount of time directed on the package) rinse the conditioner out of your hair. Carefully comb it using a wide-tooth comb and allow it to air dry.

Drumsticks are an integral part of the delicious sambhar and other South Indian delicacies. It has a unique taste and texture. You would be surprised to know that the drumstick tree or moringa tree is highly beneficial for the human body. Astonishingly all its parts are edible as well.

Let’s delve deep into the secrets of the moringa plant and identify the benefits.

What is the Moringa Tree?

The miracle tree Moringa is a multipurpose that is native to parts of Africa and Asia. It is also called drumstick tree by the British and Malunggay in Philippines
In India, it is found on the foothills of the Himalayan mountains. This plant belongs to the family Moringaceae. It derives its name from the Malayalam word, ‘Muringa’. It is a multipurpose plant and its leaves, pods, fruits, flowers, roots and bark are beneficial in one way or the other.

The moringa tree grows easily in semi-arid, tropical and sub-tropical climate and is reported to be beneficial for human beings as its various parts are edible.
Some of the most commonly used parts are moringa leaves and seeds. Moringa seeds and roots are used to extract oil and the flowers can be cooked and eaten.
Apart from these, its bark, sap, seeds, oil, leaves, roots and flowers are used in making traditional medicine in many countries.
Health Benefits Of Moringa:

The most amazing thing about moringa is that all parts of this plant including its bark, roots, leaves, flowers, seeds, sap and pods are a storehouse of nutrients and antioxidants. Thus, this plant possesses innumerable health benefits and has the capacity of curing several diseases. For this reason, it is referred to as the ‘miracle tree’ and is widely used in traditional medicine. The various health benefits of moringa are as follows.

1. The seeds of moringa contain 40 percent edible oil known as Ben oil. This clear, sweet and odourless oil is rich in antioxidants and is similar to olive oil in terms of its nutritional profile.It has an indefinite shelf life as it does not turn rancid like other oils.

2. Moringa leaves are the most widely used parts of this plant. These leaves are edible. They contain three times more iron than spinach.

3. Moringa contains all the essential amino acids needed by the body. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins which are needed to grow, repair and maintain cells. Human body manufactures 10 to 12 amino acids. The remaining 8 amino acids are known as the essential amino acids which should be provided from everyday diet and moringa contains all of them. The list of essential amino acids and their benefits are given below.

ISOLEUCINE Helps in building protein and enzymes and creation of biochemical components within the body.
LEUCINE Builds protein and enzymes along with isoleucine to enhance body’s energy and alertness.
LYSINE Ensures the absorption of right amount of calcium by the body and aids in collagen formation and production of antibodies, hormones and enzymes. Maintains the balance of nutrients that reduce viral growth.

Moringa powder which is prepared by grinding the dried leaves of moringa contain seven times more vitamin C than oranges, 25 times the amount of iron in spinach, 36 times the amount of magnesium in eggs, 50 times more vitamin B3 than peanuts and 50 times more vitamin B2 than bananas.

Plants That Support Heart Health

There are more and more growers of this forgotten native fruit every day. I have seen aronia juice and jelly in the grocery store. This tart berry is very high in antioxidants and studies are finding it successful in helping people recover from heart attacks and strokes. My husband and I use this often as part of a delicious breakfast.

Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.)

Another tart berry, this time a hard little red one that grows on the hawthorn tree, is a classic heart tonic. I have found hawthorn berries in jellies and syrups, though my favorite is the jelly. In our area, it is easy to find hawthorn trees growing in the wooded areas between farm fields. The berries can easily be foraged and made into food, dried, or frozen for later use. Hawthorn is known as a heart protectant and may help to lower cholesterol and regulate blood pressure. Everyone should have a little hawthorn berry in their diet as often as possible. Garlic is well studied for its use in reducing cholesterol, but it must be used on a routine basis.
