The newborn hearing screening test helps identify babies who have permanent hearing loss as early as possible. This means parents can get the support and advice they need right from the start.
One to two babies in every 1,000 are born with permanent hearing loss in one or both ears.
This increases to about 1 in every 100 babies who have spent more than 48 hours in intensive care.
Most of these babies are born into families with no history of permanent hearing loss.
Permanent hearing loss can significantly affect babies' development.
Finding out early can give these babies a better chance of developing language, speech, and communication skills.
It'll also help them make the most of relationships with their family or cares from an early age.
Purpose
The purpose of any screening program is to detect infants with a suspected deviation that requires further examination at the earliest age possible in order to refer for diagnosis and treatment, if required.
Hearing deficits in new born babies can interfere with normal speech and language development, communication, and the ability to learn. It is important to detect even a mild hearing loss in order to treat the problem or compensate for the loss when possible. The earlier a child who is deaf or hard of hearing starts getting services, the more likely the child’s speech, language, and social skills will reach their full potential. Children with mild to moderate hearing deficits may be at a disadvantage educationally, emotionally, and socially. Thus, ongoing review of hearing and speech age-appropriate milestones, risk factors, and routine hearing screening is critical.
IMPORTANT OF HEARING TEST
All infants should be screened for hearing loss no later than one month of age. It is best if it is part of their very first newborn care. If the baby does not pass this hearing screening, it’s very important to make an appointment for a full hearing test no later than three months of age.
Babies who do not pass the hearing test should see a specialist no later than three months of age. This will help make sure every infant with hearing loss is diagnosed early.
Providing recommended medical, hearing, educational, and support services to infants with hearing loss no later than six months of age will help the child develop communication and language skills that will last a lifetime.
Hearing is important for speech, language development, reading and learning
A hearing screening can detect if your child needs further hearing testing.
Even if your child has passed a hearing screening previously, their hearing can change.
Hearing problems can be related to medical problems.
Hearing loss is invisible and child may appear to be not paying attention. Hearing screening will consist of one or more of the following tests:
Tympanometry - Screening of middle ear function to determine presence/absence of middle ear fluid and/or wax which could interfere with normal hearing.
Audiometry - Screening of hearing acuity.
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) - An objective test that screens for an estimate of hearing sensitivity. If your child passes the hearing screening, you may not be contacted. A hearing screening only provides a snapshot of how your child performs on the day the test was administered and is not a substitute for a complete hearing evaluation by an audiologist. If your child fails either part of the screening, a rescreen and/or referral will be made.
Results will be communicated, and follow-up on referrals for those “at risk” continued, until the problem is resolved in some manner.
We are well positioned to meet your health needs through several audiology care packages that have been articulately put together for cooperate organizations and individuals. Our clinic days are: Mondays-Fridays from 9am-5pm, and emergency services can be arranged
