Today, we pause to remember the lives lost during the Rwandan Genocide, a tragic chapter in history that unfolded over approximately 100 days in 1994, during which an estimated 800,000 to 1 million Tutsi and moderate Hutu were systematically murdered. This was a time of unimaginable pain—when countless innocent men, women, and children were taken far too soon, many massacres occurring in homes, churches, and schools across Rwanda.
We honour their memories with heavy hearts, standing in solidarity with the survivors—many of whom carry lasting physical and emotional scars—and whose strength and resilience continue to inspire the world.
Though the scars remain—some visible and many unseen—the courage of a nation that chose unity, healing, and hope over hatred and division persists. Rwanda has made significant strides in reconciliation and rebuilding, emphasising education, justice, and international cooperation.
As we reflect, may we never forget the lessons of the past. May we speak up against injustice wherever it occurs, extend compassion to one another, and commit ourselves to building a future where such darkness is never repeated.
Remember. Reflect. Renew our promise: Never again. 🕊️
