Preparing children for school resumption works best when you keep it practical, structured, and consistent. Here are clear, easy-to-follow tips:

1. Reset sleep routine early
Start adjusting bedtime and wake-up time at least 1–2 weeks before school resumes. Move it gradually (15–30 minutes daily) until it matches school days.

2. Reintroduce morning routine
Practice a simple school morning flow: wake up → brush teeth → bathe → dress up → eat breakfast → pack bag. This reduces first-day chaos.

3. Organize school materials
Get uniforms, shoes, bags, books, and lunch items ready ahead of time. Label everything to avoid loss.

4. Create a study corner at home
Set up a quiet, distraction-free space for homework and revision. It helps children switch into “learning mode” easily.

5. Revise gently
Go over previous schoolwork or basic concepts (reading, writing, numbers) in short, fun sessions. Avoid overwhelming them.

6. Talk about school positively
Discuss what they can look forward to—friends, teachers, fun activities. This reduces anxiety, especially for younger children.

7. Set clear expectations
Remind them about basic school behavior: listening to teachers, completing tasks, being respectful, and following routines.

8. Practice independence
Encourage skills like dressing themselves, packing their bags, and tidying up. It builds confidence in school.

9. Plan meals and snacks
Ensure they are used to eating breakfast and healthy meals at regular times to maintain energy during school hours.

10. Limit screen time
Reduce late-night TV/phone use so they can sleep early and wake up refreshed.

11. Prepare emotionally
If your child feels nervous, acknowledge it and reassure them. Keep communication open so they feel supported.

12. Stay consistent
Once school starts, stick to routines. Consistency helps children adjust quickly and perform better.

Holidays can be enjoyable and restorative for children with special needs, but they require intentional structure and flexibility. The goal is to balance fun with predictability while minimizing triggers.

Here are practical, field-tested tips:

1. Maintain a Predictable Routine

Completely unstructured days often lead to dysregulation. Keep core anchors consistent:
• Wake-up and bedtime
• Meal times
• Therapy carryover (even if reduced)

You don’t need a full school schedule—just enough structure to create stability.

2. Use Visual Schedules

Many children process information better visually.
Create a simple daily plan using:
• Pictures
• Symbols
• Written lists (depending on ability)

This reduces anxiety and prepares them for transitions.

3. Plan Activities with Sensory Needs in Mind

Avoid overstimulating environments when possible. Instead:
• Choose quieter times for outings
• Bring sensory tools (headphones, fidgets, weighted items)
• Build in “calm breaks” between activities

4. Prepare for Changes in Advance

If there’s going to be:
• Travel
• Visitors
• Events

Preview it ahead of time using:
• Social stories
• Role play
• Simple explanations

Unexpected changes are a major trigger—preparation reduces resistance.

5. Prioritize Functional Communication

Continue encouraging communication daily:
• Model language consistently
• Prompt requests instead of anticipating needs immediately
• Reinforce any attempt to communicate (verbal, gestures, AAC)

Holidays are not a break from learning—they’re a natural practice environment.

6. Limit Over-Scheduling

Too many activities can lead to fatigue and behavior challenges.
Focus on:
• Quality over quantity
• One or two meaningful activities per day

7. Reinforce Positive Behavior

Use what already works:
• Praise
• Tokens
• Preferred activities

Consistency in reinforcement prevents regression.

8. Include Preferred Interests

Build activities around what the child already enjoys:
• Favorite toys
• Music
• Games

This increases engagement and reduces resistance.

9. Prepare for Travel (if applicable)
• Pack familiar items (toys, snacks, comfort objects)
• Keep routines as close as possible
• Plan for breaks during long trips

10. Take Care of the Caregiver

Your regulation affects the child’s regulation.
• Plan downtime for yourself
• Delegate when possible
• Keep expectations realistic
