Integrity On The Road A Lesson From An Elderly Tricycle Driver

In the bustling streets of Lawanson, Lagos, I boarded a tricycle, commonly known as a napep for a short trip to Itire. As a Lagos boy I negotiated the fare with the elderly driver, an agreement we both accepted without much fuss. The ride was smooth, and I settled into the journey, trusting that our agreed fare price would hold.

Upon reaching my destination, I pulled out my wallet to pay the driver. My wallet, filled with money and change intended for other purposes, caught his eye. Suddenly, the elderly driver, whom I had regarded with respect for his age, declared that he could no longer accept our initially agreed fare. He demanded more money.

Everyone in the tricycle, including other passengers, was taken aback by his abrupt change in stance. The shock was palpable. Here was an elderly man, someone expected to uphold integrity and serve as a role model, especially in a society that deeply respects its elders. His actions were a stark contrast to the values one would hope to see demonstrated by someone of his age.

I found myself in a predicament. The money in my wallet was earmarked for a specific purpose, leaving me with limited funds for my return trip. Despite my explanation and the evident disappointment among the passengers, the driver remained adamant. A fellow passenger, witnessing the situation, generously offered to cover the additional cost. However, I declined, determined to address the issue based on principle rather than convenience. I ended paying him the amounts he demanded, just to allowed peace.

Leadership is not confined to those in political office or corporate boardrooms. It extends to everyday interactions, where actions speak louder than words. The elderly driver, by reneging on our agreement, inadvertently showcased the kind of legacy our society could inherit if integrity is not prioritized. This is reminiscent of how leaders, by failing to adhere to ethical standards, set a precedent that can lead to widespread cynicism and mistrust.

For a society to thrive, its members, especially the elders, must exemplify integrity. This ensures that the younger generation has positive role models to emulate. The driver's actions were a lost opportunity to reinforce the value of keeping one’s word, regardless of the situation.

This experience with the tricycle driver was more than a simple disagreement over fare; it was a microcosm of the challenges facing our society today. It highlighted the crucial need for integrity, especially among those expected to lead by example. Upholding one's word, even in small matters, reinforces trust and sets a standard for others to follow.

The elderly driver had an opportunity to demonstrate integrity but chose otherwise, leaving a lasting impression on all involved. As we navigate our daily lives, let this story serve as a reminder of the power of integrity. It is the glue that holds the social fabric together, ensuring that trust and respect remain cornerstones of our interactions.

If someone can do this to his fellow human being, where is the empathy, love, and kindness? This happened in Lawanson to Itire in Lagos state, and it serves as a poignant example of the broader societal issues we face today. Let us all strive to be better, to uphold our word, and to lead with integrity in every aspect of our lives.
