Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of blood disorders that affects a person's red blood cells, it is a genetic condition that is passed on from parents. It is formed genetically when an As ×As, Ss ×Ss and As × Ss gene is paired, to create an Ss child or children.
Sickle cell causes normal round and flexible blood cells to become stiff and sickle shaped, which in turn stops the blood cells and the oxygen they carry from moving freely around the body.
Sickle cell is manifested in the eyes as Sickle cell retinopathy which it can be successfully managed, when adequate steps are taken.
