*Endometriosis*

Endometriosis is a common and painful condition that happens when tissue from the uterine lining grows outside of the uterus. More than 1 in 10 women experience the condition.

Ultrasound scans are valuable in diagnosing endometriosis and evaluating the severity of the condition. However, their accuracy may depend on the person performing the scan. Divincair Diagnostics remains the gold standard for diagnosing endometriosis.

*Symptoms of Endometriosis*

Endometriosis causes tissue similar to the uterine lining to grow outside the uterus. This can cause a wide range of symptoms, depending on where the tissue grows.

Symptoms include:

-Pelvic pain, which may be severe
-Fertility problems
-Bleeding from the re**um
-Bleeding between periods
-Passing large blood clots during a period
-Heavy periods that last a long time or come very frequently
-Pain during s*x
-Chronic lower back pain

-Pain when urinating
-Digestive issues or painful bowel movements, especially during menstruation.

*Can someone with endometriosis have a normal ultrasound?*

Yes, someone with endometriosis can have a normal ultrasound. Ultrasound is a valuable tool in diagnosing endometriosis, but it is not entirely accurate.

A 2021 Cochrane review into ultrasound as a diagnostic tool found that endometriosis may still be present even if a doctor finds no evidence during an ultrasound scan.

What are the different types of ultrasounds offered in pregnancy?

There are 3 main types of ultrasound offered in pregnancy.

(i) A dating scan ~ can be used to confirm your due date if you are unsure of your last menstrual period or your date of conception.
It is usually offered to pregnant women from 10 weeks to 13 weeks' gestation, but can be carried out any time from 6 weeks.

(ii) A nuchal translucency scan ~ might be offered to help you work out the risk of your baby having a chromosomal abnormality. It might be done as part of a dating scan, or it can be done separately. You might be advised to have a blood test with it.

(iii) An morphology or anomaly scan is a detailed ultrasound scan that looks at your baby’s body and observes the position of the placenta, the umbilical cord, the amniotic fluid around your baby, and your uterus and cervix. It is usually done at 18 to 20 weeks' gestation.

Sometimes ultrasounds are performed more often during pregnancy. This might happen if:

✓You are having twins or triplets
✓You have a complication in your pregnancy
✓Your healthcare professional has concerns about the health of your baby.
