National HIV guideline recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6months of life of your child. This is to answer the numerous questions about breastfeeding a child whose mum is HIV positive. Please and Please, the best measure you can gift your child as a reactive mum, is the gift of exclusively breastfeeding them.... Giving Breastfeeding and complementary foods together exposes the child or creates higher chances of introducing germs to the child's system, and an altered immunity wont go well in the preventive management of your child.

All pregnant women should be screened for HIV during Ante Natal visits, and Post natal. This promotes early detection and prevention of transmission to child.
If Positive, the woman must be linked to care and Anti Retroviral therapy initiated, this is because the child is at higher risk of getting infected. At 8 months of pregnancy, Viral load test to detect the amount of virus in her blood.

PREVENTION OF MOTHER TO CHILD TRANSMISSION OF HIV/AIDS

Meaning : All interventions offered and geared towards blocking the transmission of HIV from mother to child. This includes :
1. Early detection of positive mother - Both Pre Natal, Antenatal, and Post natal stage.
2. All identified Mothers are linked to Care and Treatment initiated ASAP.
3. At 32 weeks of Pregnancy a Viral Load test is done to detect the quantity of virus in the blood. This helps detect if the chances of exposure of the child is high or low...from which we determine a high risk exposed child or low risk exposed child. To aid proper preventive measures. Yes! You heard me, your child can be protected from the virus!
