Here's how I came about the idea of ice block business.
The brother I advised came back to me that he had implemented the advice and he would be glad if we can implement the idea together.
Tell me more I asked? He said do you know you can make at least per day from retailing ice block?
I replied I am not sure because it's not what I have tried before, he said someone just took him through the business and showed him every details about the business.
And very funny, we won't need up to to start the business.
I told him let's start tomorrow, I know where I can buy ice block in bulk and where I think they'll buy from me as well.
We don't even need to buy from where the person buys (in order not to create avoidable competition)
I will come and pick you by 5am tomorrow, get set let's go and pray our fajr at a place close to where we will buy the ice block.
By 4am I left my house and got to my friend's house around 4:45am. By 5:25am, we're already at the ice block factory at Soka, Ibadan.
After praying, we started the bargaining. That very day, I stocked 50 pieces of ice block and sold it all that very day as well.
The brother was surprised I could achieve that feat in a new business.
Here's what I did:
I did what is called place utility in Economics. I bought from Oluyole local Govt, I sold them at another local government (Akinleye local Govt)
I just dropped my main joker, you can apply this to any business.
Buy from where the items are surplus, sell in another location where they're not in excess.
I bought from the area where ice block is abundantly available and sold them in another area where they needed it most.
As my friend was introducing the business to me, I was drawing up the list of my target customers in my mind.
Instantly, I came up with at least 5 customer groups. Here are my target customers:
🍁Those road side traders selling soft drinks, pure water or bottle water.
🍁Food canteens
🍁Soft drinks hawkers (with special focus on Hausa traders)
🍁Road side kiosks (most especially those Hausa owners) and chemists (there's this lady that secured her complex for me, I will go and greet her one day, in shaa Allaah)
🍁Kunu and zobo producers (I went to meet these people at their base) I asked my way out to know where Kunu is being produced in large quantities.
🍁Ice block retailers (these are my main customers) I had 2 main customers that buy 50 - 60 on a daily basis.
Here's the critical success factors to ice block business:
Get a separate number for this business and distribute it widely (you'll get a lot of inbound requests for ice block during the peak period - dry season)
I did like 5 banners and have 2 separate lines for this business (I had to switch off the line now that I am not doing the business)
Have a reliable source to get ice block, Ice block is early morning business, you have to wake up early and get to the buying venue as early as possible.
Build your own customer base and treat them well, they'll always be there for you and also help you to generate more customers via referral.
You'll need a standby delivery car or vehicle. If you have one fine, I used my big daddy camry to carry out the hustle then.
If you don't have your personal car, work with a reliable Korope or micra driver (but you need to be very cautious as they will likely sn**ch the business from you once they're aware of what you make on a daily basis)
Here's the top level secret, ice block is everyday business even when it's raining I did make sales because I targeted Hausas (they love anything cold)
If you can get a location for this business in a big market, fine and good.
This is one of the ways to make money from ice block business.
Another means is to go into production of ice block, to do this you will need to set up your ice block factory in an environment with constant supply of electricity.
If you can combine production with marketing it yourself by having sales outlets in various locations, you can make - on a daily basis depending on your production vokume and marketing ability.
Lest I forget, this is what profit on ice block retailing looks like: we buy at #120 per one and sell at #350 - #400.
I always put aside #80 - #100 as delivery costs, my target was 100 blocks per day but I did sell 120 - 140 at times.
I always make sure I eat better food from my proceeds (my grandma did say he who works well will eat nice meals)
You can do the maths to realize how profitable the business is!
