HelpMum Africa Awards Five Million Naira to Student Innovators Improving Maternal and Infant Care

At HelpMum Africa, our wider mission is to improve healthcare outcomes, and part of that work is nurturing young innovators who are building real solutions for mothers and babies. A few months ago, we set aside five million naira to support students in universities who are creating important tools in the maternal and infant health space. This led to the launch of the HelpMum Africa Carecode Hackathon.

We received many strong applications and selected three winners.
Our first place winner is Francisca Liora from the University of Lagos. She created NEKAH, an AI powered companion that supports women through pregnancy and helps with early detection and emergency response.

Our second place is Feyisayo and her team from Covenant University. They built Mums Mind, an app that uses AI trained on real baby cry sounds to help mothers understand what their babies need.

Our third place winner is Michael Adekunle from the University of Lagos. He developed E Mama Care, a voice enabled platform that helps mothers identify danger signs early and get quick access to skilled care.

We are truly excited about what these young innovators will achieve with the funding support from HelpMum Africa. We will continue to stand behind promising young people who are building the future of maternal and infant healthcare in Nigeria.

Our Executive Director, Oluwaseun Odunsi, , took the stage at the National Health Dialogue to discuss how HelpMum is bridging the gap in accessing health information and ensuring early risk detection in pregnancy.

In Nigeria, access to comprehensive healthcare services remains very uneven and complex, while urban centres host majority of the best health facilities, many rural communities are left to strained primary healthcare centres (PHCs) and inadequately skilled community health extension workers.

Our suite of solutions deployed to meet these challenges include the HelpMum chatbot, StratifyAI, The E-learning platforms and Open Source models, which combined has a user base of around 400,000.
