World Diabetes Day calls attention to how often diabetes affects the eyes before any symptoms appear.

A regular eye examination remains one of the strongest ways to prevent the vision loss that can come with the condition when it is left unchecked.

Your eyes serve you every day. Give them the care they need by booking your annual diabetic eye check.

Focus on Sight: Understanding Diabetic and Hypertensive Retinopathy

November is dedicated to raising awareness about Diabetic and Hypertensive Retinopathy—two conditions that quietly threaten vision if left unchecked. Both result from damage to the blood vessels that nourish the retina, often caused by prolonged high blood sugar or uncontrolled blood pressure.

In the early stages, there may be no warning signs. Over time, however, these conditions can lead to blurred vision, eye pain, or even permanent blindness. The good news is that vision loss from retinopathy can often be prevented through routine eye examinations and proper management of underlying health conditions.

Everyone is encouraged to:
• Monitor blood sugar and blood pressure regularly.
• Maintain a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
• Visit a licensed optometrist for annual comprehensive eye checks.
• Seek prompt care for any changes in vision.

The Nigerian Optometric Association emphasizes that prevention begins with awareness. By identifying risks early and staying consistent with medical and eye care, we can protect millions from avoidable blindness.

Healthy eyes, healthy life—take action today.

Be Careful What You Put in Your Eyes 👁️💊

Last week, a patient visited the clinic with an eye drop he had paid for during a free medical outreach. He wasn’t told what it was or how to use it. Sadly, he has now lost vision in one eye.

This is a painful reminder of how important it is to know exactly what medication you’re using — whether an eye drop or a tablet. Always ask for the name, purpose, and proper instructions before using any drug.

Free medical outreaches and community programs are often done with good intentions, but please be cautious. If you are ever unsure about a medication, see a qualified health professional before using it.

Your eyes are precious — protect them with knowledge and care.

When was the last time your child had an eye check?

Good vision is vital for learning, playing, and thriving, yet many children go without the care they need. Just as dentist visits and vaccines are part of a child’s yearly health routine, so too should regular eye examinations.

This World Sight Day, under the theme Love Your Eyes, let’s remember to Love Your Kids’ Eyes.
Make that appointment with an eye care professional today.

Countdown to World Sight Day 2025💃

Theme: Love Your Eyes: Vision for Everyone

Today, I attended to an 8-year-old boy with albinism who had been referred for an eye check. His teacher noticed he was struggling in class and raised the concern with his parents. That simple act of care made all the difference.

After his eye exam, we found he needed glasses. At first, his father was unsure, but with a little encouragement he agreed. The boy left smiling—ready to see clearly and learn better.

Parents, please make your children’s health a priority. Good vision is closely tied to learning, confidence, and growth.

And to every teacher who pays attention when a child is falling behind—thank you. Your concern may be the reason a child’s life changes for the better.

As we count down to World Sight Day on Thursday, 9th October, let’s remember to love our eyes and help the children around us do the same.
