Very powerful story

The River That Chose a Bride” — An Ibibio Ancestral Story

Long ago, in the heart of Ibibio land, there was a river called Udua Itam. It was said that no one could cross it without permission, because it was ruled by a powerful water spirit who appeared as a glowing woman at sunset.
Every planting season, the villagers offered palm oil and white fowls to the river so the rains would fall and the crops would grow. But one year, a proud chief named Ekanem Udo mocked the tradition. He said, “Why should a river choose when to bless us? I am the chief my words bring rain!”
The people feared his arrogance, but they obeyed. The offerings were stopped.
Soon, the river dried up, the sky closed its mouth, and famine came.
Then one night, a maiden named Anwa Eka dreamed of a woman dressed in white, her eyes like moonlight. The woman said, “Tell your people that the river demands a bride one pure of heart, not of gold.”
The elders gathered and cast shells. The signs pointed to Anwa Eka herself. She walked to the riverbank in silence, carrying only a white cloth and a calabash of palm oil. As she knelt, the water rose and wrapped around her like arms. The people screamed, but the maiden smiled she had become one with the river.
From that day, rain returned, crops grew, and the people rebuilt the shrine by the water. The river was at peace again. And every generation after, the priestesses of Udua Itam were chosen from Anwa Eka’s lineage.
