Tests for Couples Battling Infertility
As a pharmacist, I want you to understand that infertility is not a woman’s problem alone.
About 40% of cases are female-related, 40% male-related, and 20% involve both partners.
That’s why both partners should be evaluated.
Tests for Women
1.Hormone Blood Tests
FSH, LH, AMH
Assess ovarian reserve and ovulation.
Prolactin & Thyroid hormones (TSH, T4)
Rule out hormonal imbalances.
Progesterone (Day 21 test). confirms ovulation.
2.Pelvic/Transvaginal Ultrasound
Checks ovarian health, cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, or PCOS.
3.HSG(Hysterosalpingography)
Dye X-ray test to check if fallopian tubes are blocked or open.
4.Ovarian Reserve Test
AMH + Antral follicle count. shows egg quantity and quality.
Tests for Men
1.Semen Analysis
Evaluates s***m count, motility, morphology, and volume.
This is the first-line test for men.
2.Hormonal Profile
Testosterone, FSH, LH, prolactin. checks if hormones affect s***m production.
3.Scrotal Ultrasound
Detects varicocele, blockages, or testicular abnormalities.
Tests for Both Partners
STI Screening chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, hepatitis (infections can silently damage fertility).
Genetic Testing recommended in recurrent miscarriages or suspected inherited conditions.
Metabolic & Lifestyle Review
weight, blood sugar, stress, medications, smoking, alcohol.
Infertility is a shared condition, not a fault.
Doctors usually begin with:
Semen analysis for the man
Hormone + ultrasound tests for the woman
These tests act like a compass guiding the right treatment, whether lifestyle changes, medication, or assisted reproductive techniques like IVF.
As your pharmacist, I encourage you to approach infertility as a team. Early testing saves time, money, and emotional stress and brings you closer to your dream of parenthood. ❤️
