Exercise as a Part of Caregiving: A Dual-Benefit Approach

Exercise is a crucial, often overlooked component of effective caregiving, benefiting both the caregiver and the care recipient.

For the Caregiver: Regular physical activity serves as a vital stress management tool, helping to reduce the high rates of depression, anxiety, and burnout associated with caregiving. It also builds the physical strength and stamina needed for demanding tasks like lifting, transferring, and assisting, reducing the risk of personal injury. By prioritizing their own health, caregivers are better equipped to sustain their role over the long term.

For the Care Recipient: Integrating exercise into the recipient's routine, even light activities like walking, chair exercises, or simple stretching is key to maintaining mobility, functional independence, and cognitive health. Shared activities, such as a gentle walk, can also serve as a positive, engaging time for both individuals, strengthening their bond and improving the recipient's overall quality of life.

🤝 Roles and Responsibilities of a Caregiver.

The roles and responsibilities of a caregiver are diverse and essential, primarily focused on providing support, assistance, and comfort to an individual (often elderly, ill, or disabled) who cannot fully care for themselves. These duties can range from basic daily tasks to complex medical management.

Common caregiver responsibilities:

🛁 Personal Care
These are often referred to as Activities of Daily Living (ADLs):
Bathing and Grooming: Assisting with showering, hair care, shaving, and nail care.
Dressing: Helping the individual get dressed and undressed.
Toileting: Assistance with using the restroom or managing incontinence.
Mobility Assistance: Helping the individual move around, including transferring in and out of bed or a wheelchair.

🍎 Household and Logistical Support
Meal Preparation: Planning and preparing nutritious meals that meet dietary requirements and restrictions.
Light Housekeeping: Performing essential chores like laundry, washing dishes, and tidying living areas.
Errands and Transportation: Grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions, and driving the individual to appointments.
Home Safety: Ensuring the home environment is safe and organized to prevent accidents.

🩺 Health Management
Medication Management: Reminding or assisting with taking prescribed medications on schedule and monitoring for side effects.
Appointment Coordination: Scheduling and attending medical appointments, and communicating with healthcare providers.
Monitoring: Observing and recording changes in the individual's physical, mental, or emotional health, and reporting them promptly.
Medical Advocacy: Speaking up for the individual's needs and ensuring they receive appropriate care.

🫂 Emotional Support and Companionship
Companionship: Providing social interaction, engaging in conversations, and participating in hobbies or activities.
Emotional Support: Offering empathy, compassion, and a safe space for the individual to express their feelings.
Encouragement: Motivating the individual to maintain as much independence as possible.

💔 Why People Underrate Caregivers in Port Harcourt 💔

In Port Harcourt today, so many people still don’t understand who a caregiver truly is. They think we “just stay with old people” or “help patients take medicine.”
But caregiving is so much more than that.

We care for those who can’t care for themselves.
We wipe tears,
hold trembling hands,
give medication, clean wounds, and offer hope.
We become family when family can’t be there. ❤️

Yet, caregivers are often underrated and here’s why 👇

🕊️ 1. Lack of understanding:
Most people don’t know the level of skill, patience, and compassion it takes to care for someone sick, weak, or elderly. They see the act, but not the heart behind it.

🏠 2. Cultural mindset:
In our society, people believe family should take care of their own. So when you hire a caregiver, they say, “Why? Can’t you do it yourself?” forgetting that caregiving is a full-time, demanding job.

💰 3. Poor recognition and low pay:
Because the job is seen as “low,” many caregivers are underpaid and unappreciated even when they give their best every day.

🎓 4. Lack of professional respect:
Unlike nurses or doctors, caregivers rarely get certificates or titles. But that doesn’t make our work any less important.

🌍 5. Little awareness:
There’s not enough education or advocacy about caregiving in Port Harcourt. People don’t talk about it, so they don’t value it.

💬 The truth is caregivers are silent heroes.
We see pain, and we choose compassion.
We face stress, but we keep showing up.
We don’t wear capes, but we save lives in our own way.

It’s time to see the heart behind the service. 💖
