‎Social Media Dialogue
‎Topic: Drug Abuse – Mobilising the Community: Creating a Web of Support and Prevention (Part 3)

‎The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Rivers State Directorate, held its weekly social media dialogue on December 12, 2025. The discussion focused on the activities of the inaugurated Committee Against Drug Abuse in Obio/Akpor LGA and the contributions of MADAV NGO in curbing drug abuse, as well as the ongoing impact of NOA’s sensitisation efforts across communities.

‎Participants highlighted that rehabilitation for drug victims is costly, making it necessary for all stakeholders to work collaboratively to reduce the menace. The session also examined the roles of government, families, and the wider society in integrating programmes and initiatives aimed at preventing drug abuse.

‎The dialogue further addressed factors contributing to moral decadence and explored ways to correct these issues. It was emphasized that government agencies should intensify efforts to reduce the accessibility of hard drugs, given the alarming and pandemic nature of drug abuse in society. The need for collective action to overcome challenges and build a healthier nation was strongly reiterated.

‎Additionally, the challenges faced by the Obio/Akpor Committee Against Drug Abuse and MADAV NGO—including limited funding and security concerns—were discussed, noting how these constraints affect their ability to support affected individuals effectively.

‎In conclusion, participants stressed that victims of drug abuse should not be stigmatized or abandoned. Instead, they should be shown love, acceptance, and support to aid their recovery. The Obio/Akpor Committee Against Drug Abuse was also clarified to be a friendly, non-forceful, and approachable body—not an arresting team. Citizens were encouraged to cooperate with them for the betterment of society.

*NOA Rivers Holds Dialogue on Drug Abuse, Calls for Stronger Community Action*

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Rivers State, on Friday, 5th December 2025, held its weekly dialogue on the theme: “Drug Abuse, Mobilising the Community: Creating a Web of Support and Prevention (Part Two).”

The session brought together key stakeholders who examined the rising challenge of drug abuse and the urgent need for community driven solutions.

The guest discussants District Advocate Prince Chikere (MADAV Rivers State Secretary), Dr. Nkechi P. Nnaji (Assistant Director/COMO, Obio/Akpor LGA, NOA Rivers State), and Mr. Harry Amadi (Publicity and Influence Officer, MADAV Rivers State) highlighted the major causes of drug abuse, stressing that the problem is often rooted in peer pressure, environmental influence, trends, social class, stress, emotional distress, and similar factors.

They emphasised that individuals must be intentional about their personality and behaviour, shunning social vices like drug abuse. According to them, drug abuse can never be a solution to problems; rather, it is a problem on its own that affects the abuser’s health, mental health, behaviour, and damages the entire system over time.

A major part of the discussion focused on community responsibility.
Dr. Nkechi P. Nnaji, the Community Orientation Mobilisation Officer (COMO), NOA Obio/Akpor, noted that the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Honourable Dr. Gift Worlu, has set up a Committee on Drug Abuse to help sensitise the public, identify abusers, and support the rehabilitation of victims. She described this as a new pathway towards addressing the crisis.

The discussants collectively maintained that communities must rise, work together, and build a strong web of prevention and support to curb the menace.

The programme was anchored by Mr. Henry Ayede of NOA Rivers State.
