In a landmark move, the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has launched a cutting-edge Newborn Screening Programme, poised to drastically reduce infant mortality and morbidity in the state.

The programme, officially launched on February 27, 2026, was graced by the presence of the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Prof. Ngozi Odu, who commended RSUTH for this bold initiative.

"This programme is a beacon of hope for the people of Rivers State," Prof. Odu said, emphasizing that early detection means intervention and treatment, which saves lives, prevents disabilities, and gives every child the opportunity to grow and thrive. She assured the gathering of the government's unwavering support for the programme, aligning with the Governor's vision of providing "Health for all Rivers people."

Prof. Chizindu Alikor, CMD RSUTH, highlighted the programme's significance, stating that RSUTH has taken a bold step to address a critical gap in our healthcare system. He noted that full-package neonatal screening for newborns is rarely done in teaching hospitals and federal centres.

Dr. Boma West, a Neonatologist, emphasized that early detection and intervention can significantly reduce child mortality and improve the quality of life of children.

The launch event was attended by RSUTH Management and Board Chairman, Dr. Sampson Parker, the Executive Secretary of Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Program (RIVCHPP) Dr. Vetty Agala, Secretary, Paediatric Association of Nigeria, SOGON represented by Prof Ngozi Orazulike and other dignitaries. Medical Students Honour RSUTH CMD, Prof. Chizindu Alikor

Executives of the Christian Medical & Dental Association, Nigeria Students’ Arm (RSU Chapter), led by President Joshua Adams Dabawa, recently paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Prof. Chizindu Alikor.

The visit served to introduce the new leadership and seek professional mentorship.

In recognition of his "unwavering dedication to medical education and student welfare," the association presented Prof. Alikor with an Honorary Award.

Accepting the honour, Prof. Alikor commended the students' commitment to excellence and officially pledged his full support for their upcoming programs and outreaches.

RSUTH Hosts CPR Grand Round, Emphasises Life-Saving Techniques

In line with the commitment of the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), Professor Chizindu A. Alikor, to enhance public awareness and hospital preparedness for cardiac emergencies, the Department of Anaesthesiology organized a Hospital Grand Round on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on February 24, 2026.

The session, led by Dr. Williams Jumbo, focused on improving emergency response skills and survival outcomes in cases of cardiac arrest. It provided healthcare professionals with practical knowledge on early recognition, rapid intervention, and the critical steps needed to preserve life.

During the presentation, it was emphasized that immediate CPR is vital for preserving brain function and increasing the chances of survival. RSUTH Unveils Service Excellence Unit to Enhance Patient-Centred Care

The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has unveiled its Service Excellence Unit (SERVEX), a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening accountability, professionalism, and patient-centred healthcare delivery across the institution. The ceremony, held at the hospital’s Infectious Disease Unit, was attended by the Head of Service, Rivers State Dr. (Mrs.) Inyingi S. I. Brown, alongside the Chief Medical Director RSUTH, Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor, management staff, and healthcare stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Alikor described SERVEX as a solution-driven platform designed to monitor service delivery, support staff, and ensure patients receive quality care with compassion and dignity. RSUTH Hosts Training on Cancer Treatment Guidelines and Chemo Safety

The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) recently hosted a 2-day training for health workers on cancer treatment guidelines and chemo safety practices. The event, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and the American Cancer Society Global Academy, aimed to enhance health professionals' skills in managing cancer treatment and handling hazardous drugs.

Topics covered included the use of National Comprehensive Cancer Network Harmonized cancer treatment guidelines, CHEMOSAFE & PAIN MANAGEMENT. Experts presented on hazardous drugs, personal protective equipment (PPE), spill control, and waste management. In attendance and speakers included The Federal Ministry of Health ably represented by Dr Uche Nwokwu, the National Cordinator of Oncology and Nuclear Medicine. Dr Rafil Akande, a representative of the American Cancer Society, Prof. Kalada Korubo, Dr. E. Chisor Wabali, Dr. Rex Ijah, Pharmacist Aham-Ochi Victoria, Dr. Wobo, Emmanuel.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) RSUTH, Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor, commended the team for a training well put together. The training included practical sessions, deemed enlightening for medical and non-medical personnel, enhancing their understanding of cancer treatment guidelines and CHEMOSAFE practices.

Prof. Kalada Korubo appreciated the CMD RSUTH Prof. Alikor for ensuring the drive of this Federal Teaching Hospital training is effective at RSUTH. The ChemoSafe program aims to improve safe handling, administration, and disposal of hazardous chemotherapy drugs in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

The training objectives were to enhance knowledge, improve chemotherapy safety, equip participants with pain management strategies, and promote evidence-based practice. Expected outcomes include improved competency among health workers, enhanced patient safety, and increased awareness of standardized protocols in managing cancer patients.

The event represents a significant step towards optimizing cancer care in Rivers State, empowering health workers with tools and knowledge for best practices in treatment and management.

RSUTH Hosts Two-Day Training on Use of Multiple Micronutrient Supplements

A two-day private facility–level training for health workers on the use of Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS) was held at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) on 3rd and 4th February 2025, as part of efforts to strengthen nutrition-focused healthcare delivery in Rivers State.

The training was organized by the Rivers State Ministry of Health, Nutrition Department, in collaboration with RSUTH. It was graced by the Permanent Secretary Ministry Of Health, Prof. Mrs Justina Jumbo ably representing the Hon. Commissioner of Health Dr Adaeze Oreh as well as the Deputy Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Dr Simeon Uriah.

Participants drawn from various spheres of healthcare delivery engaged in structured training sessions aimed at improving their knowledge and practical application of multiple micronutrient supplements in clinical settings. The sessions featured expert facilitators who led discussions on key topics, including the role of micronutrients in maternal nutrition, appropriate use of MMS, and best practices for integration into routine healthcare services.

The training provided a platform for interactive learning, experience sharing, and professional development, reinforcing the commitment of the Rivers State health sector to evidence-based nutrition interventions and improved quality of care across public and private health facilities.

Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) today joined the global community to commemorate World Cancer Day under the theme “United by Unique,” with a purposeful awareness walk followed by an educative gathering within the hospital community.

The event underscored the hospital’s commitment to cancer prevention, early detection, and patient-centered care. It was graced by the presence of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Chizindu Alikor ably represented by the Deputy Chief Medical Director, Dr. Simon Uriah, and the Honourable Commissioner for Health Dr Adaeze Oreh, ably represented by Dr. Vincent Nwachukwu, Director of Medical Services in the Ministry of Health, Rivers State.

Prof. Chizindu A.
