EFFECTIVE TREATMENT OF SNAKE
MITES
Ophionyssus natricis is a common mite that
affects captive snakes.
Mite infestations can lead to irregularities
in the scales, dysecdysis, anemia, and clinical
signs such as lethargy and decreased
appetite.
Onatricis may also be a vector for the
arenavirus responsible for boid inclusion
body disease.
Mites can be transmitted via direct contact
with infested snakes or soiled substrate and
furniture.
Previously documented treatment options
included pyrethrins and pyrethroids, fipronil,
seiameciin, and ivermectin, however,
therapies have associated risks and
limitations and may not be recommended for
every patient.

We don't usually share pet health advice on social media, but this is a topic that our Pet Hospital staff are passionate about raising awareness of. Parvovirus ⚠️

Parvovirus is a virus that causes severe illness and death in dogs. It's highly contagious and can live in an infected environment for many years. The only way to protect your dog against Parvovirus is by vaccinating them as a puppy and regularly throughout their life.

Most dogs catch Parvovirus while they are out exploring. It's released in the poo of infected dogs three to four days after infection, then for a couple of weeks after their symptoms clear up. It can then survive in the environment for months to years – meaning it can be found almost anywhere dogs go.

Most dogs are exposed to Parvovirus at some point in their life, so the only way to protect them is through regular vaccination. They will need two to three parvovirus vaccines while they are a puppy, then boosters regularly throughout the rest of their life.

If you've recently lost a dog to Parvovirus, the virus will survive in your home and garden for a long time afterwards. It's almost impossible to ensure you've got rid of it all, especially in areas that are difficult to disinfect, such as the garden. This means that any unvaccinated dogs/puppies that come to your home are at risk of catching Parvovirus.

CAT SCRATCH DISEASE

Cat scratch disease is an illness caused by an intracellular gram-negative rod known as Bartonella henselae.

🚨It affects the lymph nodes draining the area where a cat scratch or bite occurs, causing regional lymphadenopathy.

🚨The vector of cat scratch disease are cats that acquire the bacteria from the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) bite with subsequent bacteremia.

🚨The cat is not symptomatic at the time. B. henselae is difficult to culture but can be detected by serologic or by PCR methods.

🚨Infection may be acquired from scratch, bite, or infected saliva through broken skin.

🚨The infection affects the lymph nodes draining the area of inoculation, usually from a scratch or bite of a young cat.

Treatment

💊In mild cases, treatment may not be necessary.

💊Supportive care, including antipyretics and anti-inflammatory medications in addition to warm compresses to the inoculation site, may be all that is needed.

💊In mild to moderate presentation in immunocompetent patients, a course of azithromycin may be indicated.

CANINE DEMODICOSIS

Demodicosis is a common disease in canine practice caused by a proliferation of Demodex mites.

🐶In young dogs with generalized demodicosis a temporary immune alteration most likely plays an important role in the pathogenesis.

🐶In older dogs, the disease may be associated with an immunosuppressive condition or treatment.

🐶In young dogs, demodicosis has a genetic basis and most likely multiple genes are involved

🐶In dogs, two Demodexspecies occur, the shorter D. canis and the longer D. injai.

🐶Dogs with generalized demodicosis and their parents should not be bred.

Clinical sign
🚨Demodicosis in dogs is characterized by alopecia and comedones, follicular casts, papules and pustules.

🚨In more severely affected dogs crusting with secondary bacterial infections and systemic signs may develop.

🚨Dogs with demodicosis due to D. canis also can exhibit pruritus, especially when secondary infection is present.

🚨Demodex injai occurs more often in terrier breeds and additionally causes excessive greasinessDiagnosis
Deep skin scrapings (currently the diagnostic method of choice), trichograms, tape strips and examinations of exudate may be useful in identifying Demodex mites. More than one mite on any given test is an indication of clinically relevant demodicosis

Treatment
💊Treatment for generalized demodicosis should be carried out by veterinary practitioner, monitored clinically and microscopically every month until the second negative skin scraping.

An elephant's skeletal structure is not designed to carry weight at its back. They have bony protrusions, extending upwards from the spine. Both the protrusions and the surrounding tissues get damaged from weight and pressure. Many elephants end up with deformed and broken backs as a result of years of long hours spent carrying tourists around. Remember Elephants are NOT for Human Entertainment / Rides. They are supposed to be FREE in the wild with their families.

DON'T RIDE THEM, PLEASE!”

Problem-solving: A newborn animal is not breathing.

Some newborn animals are very weak, especially after a difficult birth. They often have much fluid in their lungs that stops them from breathing normally.

So after parturition, you have to do these

1. If the baby is having difficulty breathing, hang it upside down. Rub the chest to make
any fluid in the lungs comes out of the nose.

2. Lift the new-born animal by the back
legs for a minute or so to let mucus and
fluid drains out from the lungs. You can
hold the back legs of a small animal
and swing it around to make mucus
come out of the nose.

3. Put the new-born animal over the back
of its mother with its head down to
help fluid drain out from the lungs.

4. Put a piece of dry grass up the baby
animal's nose. This makes it cough then
it starts breathing.

5. Make sure the baby animal sucks its
mother's teat as soon as possible. When
the mother feels a baby sucking, her
brain releases a hormone called oxytocin
into her blood that makes the milk flow
from the udder. It also makes the uterus
contract and pushes the placenta out.
