Understanding Autism: What Everyone Should Know
What Is Autism?
Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts, learns, and experiences the world.
It’s called a “spectrum” because every autistic person is different.
Common Signs of Autism
Autistic people may experience:
* Differences in social interaction
* Communication challenges (verbal or non-verbal)
* Repetitive behaviors
* Sensory sensitivities (noise, light, smell, touch)
* Deep interest in specific topics
(Note: These signs vary. There’s no “one way” to be autistic.)
Strengths Many Autistic People Have
Autism also comes with unique strengths, such as:
* Strong attention to detail
* Deep focus on interests
* Great memory
* Creativity & innovative thinking
* Honesty and straightforward communication
Myths vs. Facts
Myth: “Autistic people don’t feel emotions.”
Fact: They feel emotions deeply, they may just express them differently.
Myth: “All autistic people are the same.”
Fact: Autism is a spectrum, support needs differ.
How to Support Autistic People
* Be patient and listen
* Use clear, simple language if needed
* Respect their sensory needs
* Don’t force eye contact
* Include them in activities & decisions.
Autism isn’t a problem, exclusion is.
Let’s build a world where autistic people feel understood, respected, and included.
We all have a part to play.
Let us learn, relearn and unlearn.
