My name is Itoro Thompson, I am a trained Nutritionist. Today I will be educating you on one of the Chronic Diseases called HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE.
What is HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE?
High Blood Pressure is a common disease in which blood flows through blood vessels (arteries) at higher than normal pressures.
What does it mean if you have high blood pressure?
If you have high blood pressure, this higher pressure puts extra strain on your heart and blood vessels. Over time, this extra strain increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke. High blood pressure can also cause heart and kidney disease, and is closely linked to some forms of dementia.
Why does high blood pressure occur?
Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to stroke by damaging and weakening your brain's blood vessels, causing them to narrow, rupture or leak. High blood pressure can also cause blood clots to form in the arteries leading to your brain, blocking blood flow and potentially causing a stroke.
What is a normal blood pressure reading?
The American Heart Association (AHA) considers blood pressure to be within the normal range when both your systolic and diastolic numbers are in these ranges. Blood pressure readings are expressed in millimeters of mercury. ... A normal reading would be any blood pressure below 120/80 mm Hg and above 90/60 mm Hg.
What are the causes of hypertension?
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is dangerous because it makes the heart work harder to pump blood out to the body and contributes to hardening of the arteries, or atherosclerosis, to stroke, kidney disease, and to the development of heart failure.
Can high cholesterol levels cause high blood pressure?
High cholesterol is associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease. That can include coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. High cholesterol has also been linked to diabetes and high blood pressure.
How do you feel when you have high blood pressure?
Most people who have high blood pressure do not have symptoms. In some cases, people with high blood pressure may have a pounding feeling in their head or chest, a feeling of lightheadedness or dizziness, or other signs.
How does high blood pressure cause a heart attack?
The excess strain and resulting damage from high blood pressure (HBP or hypertension) causes the coronary arteries serving the heart to slowly become narrowed from a buildup of fat, cholesterol and other substances that together are called plaque. This slow process is known as atherosclerosis.
What are the causes of high cholesterol?
Poor diet. Eating saturated fat, found in animal products, and trans fats, found in some commercially baked cookies and crackers, can raise your cholesterol level. Foods that are high in cholesterol, such as red meat and full-fat dairy products, will also increase your total cholesterol.
