Here's my personal whys:

Why: Because there are women still baring down on hands and knees on dirt floors for hours or days

Why: Because pain relief isn't an option for many woman in active labor

Why: Because too many women are suffering with the emotional shame and physical effects and disability of rectovaginal fistulas

Why: Because its time I step up to help the fellow woman have the most desirable outcome during one of the most important times in her life, bringing her beautiful baby into the world

Being a Labor and Delivery nurse for over 10years this is very personal and my motivation is driven by the many many women (and families) who allowed me to be a part of their birth story. We all have our own and that is one story we remember throughout our lifetime.

If you ask why Cyra's Place is necessary....here's why: "In 2017, according to the Fragile States Index, 15 countries were considered to be “very high alert” or “high alert” being a fragile state (South Sudan, Somalia, Central African Republic, Yemen, Syria, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chad, Afghanistan, Iraq, Haiti, Guinea, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Ethiopia), and these 15 countries had MMRs in 2017 ranging from 31 (Syria) to 1150 (South Sudan)." The World Health Organization says, "Maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.

Each stage should be a positive experience, ensuring women and their babies reach their full potential for health and well-being.

Although important progress has been made in the last two decades, about 295,000 women died during and following pregnancy and childbirth in 2017. This number is unacceptably high.

The most common direct causes of maternal injury and death are excessive blood loss, infection, high blood pressure, unsafe abortion, and obstructed labour, as well as indirect causes such as anemia, malaria, and heart disease.

Most maternal deaths are preventable with timely management by a skilled health professional working in a supportive environment.

Ending preventable maternal death must remain at the top of the global agenda. At the same time, simply surviving pregnancy and childbirth can never be the marker of successful maternal health care. It is critical to expand efforts reducing maternal injury and disability to promote health and well-being.

Every pregnancy and birth is unique. Addressing inequalities that affect health outcomes, especially sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender, is fundamental to ensuring all women have access to respectful and high-quality maternity care."

Cyra's Place for Women's Health will bring a much needed and necessary service to this region that I hope to bring about a positive impact on how maternity, gynecology and breast health is seen in this part of the world by joining modern Western techniques and traditional Eastern practices, to encompass holistic medicine and nursing care into one collaboration.
