UMBILICAL CORD STUMP๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿ“–

**What is an umbilical cord stump?
Babies, when in the womb receives nourishment and oxygen through the placenta, which is attached to the inner wall of the mothers uterus. The placenta is connected to the baby by the umbilical cord.

After baby is delivered, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut close to your baby's body. Most mothers think the procedure is a painful one,but in actual sense it's painless.

The cut leaves an umbilical stump attached to the baby's belly button.

**How long does it take for the stump to fall off?
It takes approximately 7-21 days ie 1-2 weeks before the stump dries up and falls off.

**How do I clean the umbilical stump?
Umbilical stump needs care and attention to prevent infection and irritation,an infected stump could lead to sepsis and death.

Umbilical stump should be cleaned at least once a day, until the stump falls out.During sponge bath, warm water and a clean baby towel or cotton wool is enough to clean the umbilical stump.

There is really no need for an antiseptic, unless advised by your health care giver.Studies have shown that using alcohol or methylated spirit to clean the umbilical cord increases the time it takes for the cord to fall off, alcohol is also linked to irritation of the baby's skin.Just plain warm water is enough.

**How do I dry the umbilical stump?
Always Pat the stump dry with a clean towel after cleaning it,make sure it's completely dry before dressing your baby up.

Baby nappy or diaper should be folded down to keep the stump exposed.Do not cover stump with nappy as baby's urine and feaces can cause infection to the stump.Never attempt to pull off the stump even if it seems to be hanging by a thread.

**What are the signs of umbilical cord infection? The stump has a foul smellHas a yellowish dischargeThe skin around the base of the cord is redBaby cries when you touch the cord or the skin next to itit continues to bleed
Infection to the umbilical cord can result in omphalitis(a life threatening infection of the umbilical cord). This is considered a very serious condition and needs to be treated immediately.

A pediatrician should be contacted immediately once any of the above signs are seen.

when the stump falls off you may notice a little blood on the diaper,do not worry.it's normal sometimes, after the stump falls off there's some drainage if clear or yellow fluids and some lumpy flesh may remain. This lumpy flesh is called "umbilical granulomas" which may disappear on their own or treated by a doctor. But they aren't serious and don't contain nerves,so if treatment is necessary,it will be painless for your baby.

N/B-Do not apply close up,feaces of any animal๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Shea butter etc to your baby's umbilical cord.

Remember the saying "that prevention is better than cure"

โœจ Did you know at birth 1/3 of babies blood is still in the placenta? This beautiful cord pulsated for almost 20 minutes after this babe was born. When we practice delayed cord clamping our babies oxygen and blood volume increase, it also ensures they receive all their iron reserves and precious stem cells which help repair any damage that may have occurred during birth. Once the umbilical cord has turned white and stop pulsating is the best time to clamp and cut. โœจ

Are you pregnant for the first, second, third.... time? If so, are you making sure that you and your baby are healthy? Then the need for an antenatal care.

When you are pregnant, it is important for you to have regular check ups with your midwife or doctor. This check ups is called ANTENATAL CARE or VISITS. Having regular antenatal check ups is an important part of staying healthy and making sure your baby is healthy.
Regular check ups during pregnancy can assist in identifying and reducing risks to either you or your baby.
Antenatal visit gives you a chance to ask any questions on issues that you are unsure about.

*When should I start antenatal visit? Your first visit to an antenatal clinic should be done as soon as pregnancy is confirmed

*How often will I visit the hospital?
A normal pregnancy last for 38โ€”40weeksAfter your first appointment, subsequent appointment will be done every 4weeks until later in your pregnancy, when visits become more frequent as you get closer to your date.
You may need to have antenatal visits more often if there are any problems with you or your baby.
You can also make appointments to see your midwife or doctor at any time during pregnancy, if you are worried about how your pregnancy is progressing.

*Services rendered during antenatal visit?
At first you will be registered in the health facility Your midwife or doctor will check your blood pressure, weight, height A lot of question about your health will be asked, your medical, family medical, gynaecology and obstetrics history will be taken to help the doctor/midwife plan your care. Booking test will be done (discussed subsequently)

NOTE; it is important to adhere to all instructions given to you by your midwife or doctor in other to have a healthy baby.

๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿ’žPregnancy is not and will never be a disease (As some mothers claim) but a normal physiological process and a blessing from God ๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿ’žsee your midwife for more information on antenatal care or drop your comment ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ“–PREPARING FOR PREGNANCY๐Ÿ“–

STOP BIRTH CONTROL

If you want to conceive, you will need to discontinue any forms of birth control.you can get pregnant right away after stopping some types of contraception.when your period starts, so does your first cycle of trying to conceive.some women get pregnant right away, but for others,it takes a few months.

EAT WELL

You can get many vitamins and minerals from eating a healthy and balanced diet.

START A MULTIVITAMINS

Give yourself a boost by taking a multivitamin because pregnancy is taxing on the body's nutritional stores. Starting a prenatal will help you avoid any nutritional deficiencies during early pregnancy.

TAKE FOLIC ACID

Take folic acid or folate supplement to prevent neural tube defects during early pregnancy. Taking at least 400 to 800 micrograms of folic acid per day, once you are pregnant, your doctor/midwife may prescibe a higher amount.

EXERCISE

Moving your body at least three to four times a week is another great way to prepare for pregnancy. You will get additional health benefits with exercise.

STOP SMOKING, ALCOHOL AND DRUGS

Smoking, using drugs and drinking alcohol can harm an unborn baby in many ways. Drinking puts baby at risk of fetal alcohol syndrome(FAS). Smoking exposes your baby to harmful chemicals, restricts blood flow and may even cause preterm labor. Using hard drugs can also cause birth defects, miscarriage or stillbirths.

REGULAR S*X

Have s*x often, be spontaneous and passionate. After all, s*x is what will get you pregnant. If you don't have any known fertility issues, don't worry about timing s*x at first, instead have frequent unprotected s*x throughout your cycle.

HAVE HIM GET CHECKED

Though much of a healthy pregnancy has to do with the women, it's good idea for him to get checked out too. Around 30 percent of infertility cases can be caused by males. Ensure that;
.He eats well
.stop smoking and taking drugs
.Exercises a lot
.stop alcohol intake
