Yesterday was World Cancer Day, and we want to raise awareness about a rare but important condition: eye cancer.

Eye cancer occurs when cells in or around the eye grow uncontrollably, forming tumors. While uncommon, it’s essential to know that these cancers can affect both adults and children. In adults, the most common type is ocular melanoma, which develops in the eye’s pigment-producing cells. In children, retinoblastoma, which starts in the retina, is the most frequently seen eye cancer.

Eye cancer often has no obvious symptoms in its early stages, which is why regular eye exams are so important. However, as it progresses, you may notice painless vision loss, blurry vision, flashes of light, floaters, dark spots, or even a growing dark spot on the colored or white part of your eye. In children, a white glow in the pupil can be a warning sign.

Certain factors can increase the risk, including fair skin, light-colored eyes, older age, and prolonged exposure to UV light from the sun or tanning beds. If eye cancer is suspected, your eye doctor will use comprehensive eye exams, ultrasound, and imaging tests to diagnose and assess the condition.

Treatment depends on the type and stage of cancer and may include surgery, radiotherapy, or laser therapy. The goal is always to remove the tumor while preserving as much vision as possible.

Let’s talk about something interesting—color vision!

Most people think “color blindness” means seeing in black and white, but that’s actually pretty rare.

The truth? Most people with color vision challenges can see colors just fine—they just mix up certain ones.

Red and green looking similar? That’s the most common type. Blue and yellow tricky to tell apart? That’s rarer and usually more challenging.

True color blindness (seeing only in grayscale) is called Achromatopsia, and it’s extremely uncommon.

Here’s the thing: if you or your child struggle distinguishing colors, it’s worth checking out. We can easily test for this during a regular eye exam.
