Officially an East side gal now, about to start a new decade in a new part of town.

Moving is always stressful and as a home body that needs a cozy safe space to nest I always feel a bit like a repotted plant. Figuring out where the light is, how the soil feels against my roots, how much water I need now. So this week I’m walking barefoot, practicing daily yoga nidra, taking lavender drops to calm my nervous system and finding my new roots.

I’ve been feeling a little bloated and gurgly in my belly and tired in my mind and body in the last few days.

These are key symptoms of spleen qi deficiency in Chinese medicine. (The spleen, with the stomach, is the key organ of digestion and arguable the centre of your health).

When I woke up feeling heavy, tired and bloated today I went to my healing toolbox to encourage my body back to balance.

In todays toolbox 🧰 👇

1️⃣ Deep belly breaths - with one hand to my belly, one hand to my heart
2️⃣ Belly massage using soothing oils (see previous post on how to massage your belly)
3️⃣ Needles - I used the digestive diamond (as pictured) to soothe and nourish my digestion. This was paired with distal points in my wrists and ankles - distal points are thought to be even more powerful that local points.
4️⃣ Rest - I lay for 20 minutes to allow the needles to do the work, I lay down after teaching my classes. This is the space and time to give yourself as much rest as your body is asking for. The more you push your body when it’s in disharmony, the more it will push back.

A Sunday reminder from to prioritise your rest in the same way you prioritise your work and your play.

When we prioritise rest and take time to activate our rest state (parasympathetic state) our digestion works better - this is the state of rest and digest. Our energy is better - as our body is absorbing all the nutrients from our food and we’re not surviving off adrenaline. From rest we can live healthier, happier and more fulfilled lives … sounds pretty great right?

A little reminder for when you feel you have so many things to do and no energy in the tank to do them. How would it feel to step away and take rest.

Rest being anything that calms down your nervous system enough to switch off your stress response.

Coming from this place of rest, your tasks will seem smaller and more achievable, your body will feel more at ease and your thoughts more supportive.

If you feel overwhelmed, can you prioritise your rest, even just pausing for 10 breaths - counting 4 as you inhale, and 8 as you exhale.

It’s official, the winter cold has hit Amsterdam 🤧

Take this time to nest, to take long hot showers (or a bath if you’re so lucky), to lather yourself in oils blended with eucalyptus and rosemary and then lay on your mat for some immune boosting yin.

The body is constantly self regulating, adapting to the season, the food, the people and the energy that we surround ourself with. As we move into each new season and climate, the body adapts. To travel to the opposite season that your body is adapted to is a bit like turning your internal world upside down 🌍 🤸‍♀️ *hence why moving between seasons is frowned upon by Chinese Medicine.

Join me on the mat this week to practice self regulation. Observing your body, your breath moment by moment and noticing what you need. No two practices are ever the same.

I teach a lot about taking the time to nourish your body, being still and taking rest. For the next two weeks I’m taking this to the next level. Turning off my phone and disconnecting from the digital world we all spend so much time in.

Disconnecting from the digital world so I can reconnect to my own practice and to the spaciousness of no emails or phone or time commitments. I’ll be diving into books, freckling my skin in the sun and drinking wine. It will also include practicing yin on the grass, treating my family with acupuncture… and if my dad gets his wish then teaching a daily sunrise flow and a sunset yin class (so quite similar to my day to day life 😉).
