// World Autism Awareness Day – 2nd of April

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects social communication, behavior and sensory processing. As a spectrum, it presents differently in each individual.

🦷 In dentistry, individuals with autism may experience challenges such as sensory sensitivities, anxiety and difficulties adapting to clinical environments.

Prevention plays a crucial role - regular dental visits, adapted communication and early interventions can significantly improve oral health outcomes and reduce the need for invasive treatments.

By creating a patient-centered and sensory-friendly environment, dental professionals can ensure more comfortable and effective care.

As part of the EDSA Prevention Department, we emphasize that inclusive dentistry is preventive dentistry.

Today, we stand in support of individuals with autism and promote accessible, respectful and compassionate oral healthcare.

//16TH EPSA ANNUAL RECEPTION - 26.02.2026

On the 26th of February, our Training Officer, Seren Ibraim, had an excellent chance to join EPSA’s 16th Annual Reception at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium.

During this event, students, legislators, medical professionals, patient advocates, and business leaders came together to discuss the future of pharmacy and healthcare in Europe. The conversations emphasised the crucial role of cooperation in building more robust healthcare systems, from health literacy and digitalisation to the changing role of pharmacists.

//World Down Syndrome Day – 21st of March

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is a global awareness day officially recognized by the United Nations since 2012. The date symbolizes the triplication of chromosome 21, which causes Down syndrome.

Individuals with Down syndrome may experience specific oral health challenges, including an increased risk of periodontal disease, delayed tooth eruption, malocclusion.

🦷 Prevention and early dental care are essential in improving oral health and overall quality of life.

As dental students and future professionals, we play an important role in promoting inclusive, preventive and patient-centered dental care.

Today, EDSA joins the global community in raising awareness and advocating for equal access to health care for everyone.

// EDSA Country in Spotlight 💡— 🥁
BASDM (Bulgaria)!

🇧🇬 BASDM (Bulgarian Association of Dental Students) is a driving force for dental education and community service in Bulgaria. Representing a massive community of approximately 3,500–4,000 dental students across the country’s 3 dental faculties, they are dedicated to professional growth and public health. 🌍

The association is led by a Executive Board of 5 members and supported by 180 active members who bring their projects to life. Their work is characterised particularly through their extensive prevention campaigns in kindergartens and schools.

One of their most beloved achievements is the “Teddy Bear Hospital,” where members spend days teaching children how to brush properly and—most importantly—helping them overcome their fear of the dentist through play. 🧸🦷

BASDM’s impact goes beyond the clinic. Over the past two years, they have successfully organised the National Student Congress “The Way to Smile” and the EVP Plovdiv 2025. They are also known for their incredible charity bazaars, including their recent Baba Marta sale of Martenitsi, a beautiful Bulgarian tradition symbolising health and good luck. 🧶❤️🤍

Looking ahead, the next 12 months are packed! They are launching workshops with international lecturers, developing a mentor-mentee program to bridge the gap between older and younger students, and continuing their signature volunteer initiatives. 📢

Currently, students in Bulgaria face a unique challenge: finding patients for clinical requirements due to the high density of private clinics in university towns. However, this environment pushes BASDM members to be even more proactive and professional in their approach to patient care. 🇧🇬🦷

We, at EDSA, are truly proud to shine a light on the impressive commitment and work of BASDM! 💙💭🫂

//Meeting of GED stakeholders - 26.02.2026

On 26th February 2026, EDSA representatives Eliška Jandová and Saulė Skinkytė participated in the Meeting of the GED (Graduating European Dentist) stakeholders, held as a follow-up to last year’s event in Dublin. The workshop brought together key stakeholders in European dental education to continue discussions on the future framework for graduating dentists, with a focus on capability, clinical training standards, and safe transition into practice.

It was a valuable opportunity for EDSA to actively contribute the student perspective to this important reform process and to ensure that the voice of European dental students remains part of shaping the future of our profession. 🦷🇪🇺🤝
