On Monday evening, September 29th, 2025, a memorial training for Gertjan Martens sensei took place in dojo Suhari in Amsterdam. More than 80 karateka gathered in Gertjan’s beloved dojo; a wonderful group of people together in a space that was, truth be told, a little too small. Friends, students, teachers, dear loved ones, family. The energy in the room was palpable, and through that, so was the presence of Gertjan.

After beautiful words from Andre ter Veer, I shared the words that Tran Hieu sensei had written. I had the honor of leading the training. I wanted to create a balance between karate, energy, stories, anecdotes, respect, and humor—a challenging task, but one I gradually grew into. Exercises that Gertjan loved were demonstrated by his students, Frank van den Nieuwendijk shared heartfelt words on behalf of the KBN (Karatedo Bond Nederland), and together we trained kumite gata and pushing hands with a touch of sparring.

Afterwards, there was time for a dojo moment with sake and the sharing of wonderful stories. It was moving to see how lovingly everyone interacted with each other and spoke about Gertjan. A special evening for a special man, and of course as support for Ahlam and Ferras. 🙏🏻❤️

In Memoriam – Gertjan Martens (1957 – 2025)

With deep sadness we say farewell to Gertjan Martens – a great karate master, an inspiring teacher, a loving husband and father, and a passionate human being.

Gertjan belonged to the absolute top of Dutch Wado karate instructors. He held a 7th Dan in Wado Ryu Karatedo (WKF) and a 6th Dan in Wado Ryu Karatedo Academy/Renmei Japan. He dedicated more than fifty years of his life to the art of Wado Ryu karatedo and Okinawan kobudo. He was the founder and Chief Instructor of the Wado Ryu Karatedo Academy Netherlands, and he inspired, educated, and guided generations of karateka.

His achievements were remarkable: numerous national and international titles in both kata and kumite, a major role in the education of instructors in the Netherlands, and international recognition for his knowledge and skill. Yet, his true strength lay not only in his technical mastery, but in the way he taught and connected with people. He was known as a passionate and genuinely caring person, always attentive to the growth of his students and colleagues.

For many, Gertjan was a source of inspiration, a role model in discipline and perseverance, but also in kindness and humanity. His legacy lives on in the dojos, in the karateka he helped shape, and in the hearts of all who knew him.

With Gertjan’s passing, the karate world has lost an icon. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit and his teachings will continue to guide many.
