At FROLIC studio, we simply love March 🌸 Why? Well, it brings along spring, and, should this not be a good enough reason, it is also !

In 2022, we toasted to FROLIC studio receiving its B Corp certification and proudly joining the B Corp network 🥂. Now, following this year’s B Corp Month’s theme , here we are, looking back on and sharing our experience towards getting “B certified” - hoping it can inspire and provide insights for others who want to “go beyond the status quo and take action to transform the economic system” 🚀. We are proud to be part of this community working towards a better and equitable future for all!

In this 2nd edition, we dive into sustainable strategies and materials from a product design perspective.

We have written down all we know when it comes to .

Ever heard of Doughnut Economics? Do you know what regenerative design is? Or would you like to learn more about sustainability? 💡 We've got you covered!

Just as a recap: a couple of times a year, in the form of a research Miro board, we share lots of insights, on a specific topic, we typically glean at . And, this time, we have created a PDF version of the Digest too!

When designing for , we are asked to introduce an additional dimension. Designing successful sustainable products requires designing harm out already during the design process, before it even happens.

But how can we do this in practice?

In this article, we illustrate a few design principles and, for each, examples of practical strategies that we can adopt - alongside better material choices - to strengthen our efforts on the path to more sustainable product design.

How to balance a product's quality and its impact on the environment?

In product design, that often comes down to material choices. At FROLIC studio, we dived deep into this challenge - as we believe it's part of our job to research, employ and advocate for materials that lead to more sustainable products and footprints.

In this article (part one of an upcoming two-part series), we share with you “better” materials insights that could inform more sustainable product design choices.

When it comes to glass and its many qualities, we can’t get enough!

Here are a few photos from our trip to ‘t Quakeltje in Friesland that we couldn’t resist sharing.

Unlike the glass blowing technique we showed you a few posts back, Flameworking is a type of glasswork that uses a torch to melt and shape glass tubes.

Once the glass is heated to a molten state, it can be formed by blowing and shaping with tools and hand movements.

Keen to learn how to design smart products for a better world? Join FROLIC studio's founders in October for a 5-day immersive workshop in Como, Italy. As you go through the week, you will get hands-on with many design disciplines and bring your ideas to life through prototyping.

Worth mentioning that all the CIID workshops are rooted in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, so this can be a unique chance to explore how the Internet of Things can be an essential ally for a more sustainable future.

Check out all the workshops spread over two weeks and register with the link below. We hope to see you soon in the historically rich setting of the Villa Del Grumello!

On this sunny day, FROLIC studio celebrates its 9th birthday! 🌻 🎉
Here are our year's highlights:

🐝 B Corp
Yes, this is the year we were certified as a B Corp! We strive for a better world through design and are delighted to have joined a movement that reinforces our values.

✍️ Topics
Our projects brought us into the world of UX for AI, sustainable materials, urban farming and regenerative agriculture, dentistry, hospital equipment for low-resourced countries, water purification, and universal design. Research enthusiasts, check out our Research Digest on the latter (with more to come).

🌎 Better Planet Experiments
Earlier this year, we launched Better Planet Experiments, where we do little (pro-bono) explorations around a significant issue for organisations that lack the means to do so.

🏡 People
We're a full house, buzzing with different perspectives and roles and representing seven different nationalities.

Are you right or left-handed? We don't know, but your dentist sure does 😉

One learning from our research is that people often skip brushing a tooth when moving to the other side of their mouth. That's why your dentist can spot right away whether you're right or left-handed based on which side of your mouth the neglected tooth is.

We discovered this and much more while working on a project around dental health, and, tooth be told, it was a real nail-biter! 🦷😬

Our Story

We’re an innovative product design & development studio in the heart of Amsterdam.

From concept to production, digital to physical, we work with our global clients to turn strategies into great products. With an eye for form, a mind for engineering and plenty empathy for user-experience, our multi-disciplinary team creates products that look great, feel right, and simply work. We’re at an exciting time where the boundary between what is digital and physical is blurry. It’s all a little chaotic but we like to see these connected products as a playground of opportunities.
