Querido was founded by Emanuel Querido in 1915, and has been publishing children’s books since 1971, specializing in picture books, quality fiction and poetry for all age groups. Querido Children’s Books publishes 50 to 60 new titles yearly, mostly by Dutch and Flemish authors (80% of the books on the list were written in Dutch). Among them are many award winning and classic writers, like Annie M.G. Schmidt, Guus Kuijer, Toon Tellegen, Bart Moeyaert, Joke van Leeuwen and Marjolijn Hof. Foreign authors and illustrators whose work has recently been published by Querido are Timothéé de Fombelle, Cornelia Funke, Aidan Chambers, Shaun Tan and Marion Bataille. Leopold Publishers
Leopold was founded in 1923 and publishes books for all ages, from babies to young adults, ranging from poetry to unique non-fiction titles. It is famous for its award winning picture books and literary youth-novels. Tonke Dragt's The letter for the king was chosen as the best Dutch children's book of the last 50 years. Series like Frog & Friends, Little Donkey, Alfie the Werewolf, The Horror Bus are internationally known. Leopold also works together with museums and governmental institutions for special books to promote art or help create awareness for good causes. In the art-series picture books have been published about Kandinsky, Mondriaan and Ensor. Authors (among others): Tonke Dragt, Max Velthuijs, Paul van Loon, Rindert Kromhout, Annemarie van Haeringen, Yvonne Jagtenberg, Wouter van Reek, Lydia Rood, Maren Stoffels. Ploegsma Publishers
The Ploegsma list is made up mainly of children’s books for ages 3 to 15, both fiction and non-fiction. Then there are titles aimed at the whole family, such as The Great Miracle, a standard work on pregnancy and childbirth by Lennart Nilsson, informative books by bird expert Nico de Haan and Simone Kramer’s adaptations of Greek myths. Important foreign authors on the Ploegsma list include Astrid Lindgren, Beatrix Potter and Laura Ingalls Wilder. It is also the home of Dutch authors including Mirjam Oldenhave with her comical character Mees Kees, Caja Cazemier with her books for teenagers on specific themes, Sanderijn van der Doef, Marjon Hoffman, Vivian den Hollander and Jaap ter Haar.
