Breast cancer doesn’t end when treatment ends. It leaves scars, both visible and invisible. Survivors carry surgeries, side effects, fear, trauma, and sleepless nights long after the ribbons are packed away. It’s not a brand, not a trend — it’s a lifelong journey.

We need space for real conversations — about healing, about mental health, about ongoing struggles and strength. We need to honor not just awareness, but the day-to-day survival, resilience, and courage of those living with the weight of what they’ve endured💗

Midherfstfestival en Chinese Geneeskunde: Voed je Yin, lichaam en geest

Het Midherfstfestival (Zhōngqiū Jié 中秋节) is een van de meest geliefde feesten in Oost-Azië. We kennen het vooral van de volle maan en de geurige maancakes, maar binnen de Traditionele Chinese Geneeskunde (TCG) heeft dit moment een diepere betekenis: het is de tijd om balans te herstellen, te reflecteren en het lichaam te voeden terwijl de Yin-energie haar hoogtepunt bereikt.

🍂 Seizoenswijsheid: De energie van de herfst

In de Chinese seizoensleer behoort de herfst tot het Metaal-element, dat verbonden is met de longen en de dikke darm.
Metaal staat voor helderheid, loslaten en zuivering. Terwijl de lucht droger en kouder wordt, voelen ook wij de behoefte om naar binnen te keren, los te laten en te herbronnen.

TCG-focus in deze periode:

Voed en versterk de Yin-energie (vocht, rust, essentie)

Bevochtig de longen en de huid

Ondersteun de milt en maag voor een goede spijsvertering

Laat emotioneel los wat niet meer nodig is

🍐 Voedende herfstsmaken

Droogte is de belangrijkste uitdaging in deze periode. Daarom helpen vochtinbrengende en Yin-versterkende voedingsmiddelen om balans te bewaren.

Aan te raden voedingsmiddelen:

Witte, bevochtigende producten zoals peer, witte paddenstoel (silver ear), leliebol, lotuswortel, sesamzaad en amandel.

Zachte, zoete granen zoals rijst, gierst en haver om de milt en maag te versterken.

Warme soepen en congee met tofu, paddenstoelen, Chinese yam of rettich.

Beperk liever:

Te veel gegrild, pittig of gefrituurd eten, want dit droogt uit en verhoogt de interne hitte.

En natuurlijk horen maancakes (mooncakes) erbij!
Ze symboliseren eenheid en volledigheid, maar eet ze met mate. De traditionele vullingen met lotuszaad of rode bonen zijn voedend, al zijn lichtere varianten met noten of volkoren meel beter verteerbaar.

🫖 Kalmerende kruidentheeën

Een paar eenvoudige drankjes die goed passen bij het seizoen:

Peren- en leliebollencompote – bevochtigt de longen en verzacht droge keel.

Chrysant met gojibessen – verkoelt lichte hitte en verzorgt de ogen.

Ginseng met rode dadel (hongzao) – versterkt de Qi en kalmeert de Shen (geest).

🌕 Emotionele en spirituele verzorging

De volle maan staat voor harmonie, verbinding en reflectie.
Het is een moment om dankbaarheid te voelen en los te laten wat je niet meer dient — net zoals de bomen hun bladeren laten vallen.
In de TCG heersen de longen over de emotie verdriet, maar ook over de deugd loslaten.

Eenvoudige rituelen voor deze tijd:

Maanmeditatie of zachte qigong, om Yin en Yang te harmoniseren.

Schrijf of deel dankbaarheid met dierbaren.

Ga vroeg slapen en adem diep om rust en helderheid te herstellen.

🌿 De essentie van het Midherfstfestival

Meer dan een feest is het Midherfstfestival een herinnering aan balans – tussen licht en schaduw, actie en rust, vasthouden en loslaten.
Wie zich afstemt op het ritme van de natuur, voedt niet alleen zijn gezondheid, maar ook zijn gevoel van verbondenheid en innerlijke vrede.

Dus wanneer de maan opkomt en het licht zacht op de wereld valt, adem diep in, nip van je thee, en voel de stille kracht van Yin in jezelf.

Fearing a late return (and the clothes will be damaged)

抱得三春晖
bào dé sān chūn huī
Can ever repay the three months of the sunshine in the Spring?

This poem is about a mother who misses her child who is about to go on a distant journey. She makes clothes for him before his departure and makes sure that everything is sewn properly because she is afraid that the clothes will otherwise be damaged if his return is delayed.

I want to share this from my colleague.

As we are still in the Spring time of 2025 and almost going to the beginning of Summer according to the 24 Solar terms, I would like to share a poem about Spring. This is a very famous poem from the Tang Dynasty. It was also one of the first poems my children learned from my mother. They could recite it (emphasizing the past tense, because they have completely forgotten it).

《春晓》唐.孟浩然
《chūn xiǎo》 táng. mėng hào rán
"Spring Dawn" by Meng Haoran Tang Dynasty

春眠不觉晓
chūn mián bù jué xiǎo
Still sleeping on a spring morning not sensing that the dawn is already there,

处处闻啼鸟
chù chù wén tí niǎo
The chirping of the bird is heard everywhere,

夜来风雨声
yè lái fēng yǔ shēng
In the night there was the sound of wind and rain,

花落知多少
huā luò zhī duō shǎo
How many flowers have fallen down on the ground?

This poem described spring perfectly and also its changing nature. Just as dawn broke and the day begins, the birds chirp as if life is in bloom. But there was also wind and rain in the nights causing the flowers to fall to the ground describing the darker side of the season. I think it is a beautiful tribute to spring just before it is almost over. Do you share the same thoughts?

In view of Women's month, let me share you about the women's cycle and its relation to the 5 element theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM.

In TCM, a woman’s life cycle is deeply connected to the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), each representing different phases of life, emotions, and health patterns.

🌱 WOOD (Liver) – Puberty & Growth (Ages 7-21)
Life Phase: Menstrual onset, rapid growth, emotional development.
Key Organ: Liver (regulates blood & menstruation).
Emotions: Energy, ambition, but also frustration & mood swings.
Balance Tips: Manage stress, exercise, eat blood-nourishing foods.
🔥 FIRE (Heart) – Passion & Youth (Ages 21-35)
Life Phase: Love, relationships, fertility, emotional maturity.
Key Organ: Heart (circulates blood, influences fertility).
Emotions: Joy, passion, but also anxiety or restlessness.
Balance Tips: Maintain emotional balance, get quality sleep, avoid burnout.
🌍 EARTH (Spleen) – Motherhood & Nurturing (Ages 35-49)
Life Phase: Pregnancy, nurturing, stability, peak responsibilities.
Key Organ: Spleen (digestion, Qi, blood production).
Emotions: Grounded, giving, but prone to worry & overwork.
Balance Tips: Eat warm, nourishing foods, avoid stress, practice self-care.
💨 METAL (Lungs) – Menopause & Letting Go (Ages 49-60)
Life Phase: Transition, menopause, emotional release.
Key Organ: Lungs (grief, reflection, skin health).
Emotions: Reflection, refinement, but also sadness or rigidity.
Balance Tips: Deep breathing, expressive activities, yin-nourishing foods.
💧 WATER (Kidneys) – Wisdom & Longevity (60+)
Life Phase: Aging gracefully, deep wisdom, introspection.
Key Organ: Kidneys (store essence, govern aging & resilience).
Emotions: Wisdom, fear, acceptance of life’s flow.
Balance Tips: Preserve energy, eat mineral-rich foods, practice stillness.
🌿 The Cycle of Life in Harmony
Women’s life phases naturally flow like nature, shifting from growth (Wood) → passion (Fire) → nurturing (Earth) → reflection (Metal) → wisdom (Water). Aligning lifestyle, diet, and emotions with these natural rhythms promotes balance, health, and graceful aging.
