Inclusive Stations book is out!
https://books.bk.tudelft.nl/press/catalog/book/799
Inclusive Stations is the second publication of the elective course City of Innovations Project which is organized around speculating and forecasting future scenarios for the city of Rotterdam.
Through considering the way these networks have shaped the city by weaving the urbanites of the city center(s) and suburban areas, this elective has been focused on three station locations which act as gateways to the city center of Rotterdam: Meijersplein Airport station, Rotterdam Alexander rail-metro station and Slinge metro station. The ‘6 Visions X 3 Locations’ chapter is a systematization of the work of 27 masters students with input from designers of the City of Rotterdam, Delta Metropool Association and De Zwarte Hond.
The elective “City of Innovations Project - Inclusive Stations’’ is connected to current research and design studios of Complex Projects group at the Department of Architecture dealing with the role of infrastructure as a catalyst of urban developments. This output is a follow up of recent publications by Complex Projects, such as: “Living Stations” (2020), “Amsterdam 2050” (2019) and “Stations as Nodes” (2018) published by TU Delft open.

MSc2 Electives:

INCLUSIVE STATIONS_ In the Future of Public Transport 2040 scenario both main (big) stations and smaller transit-nodes are indispensable links in integrated mobility to ensure an optimum journey and seamless travel solutions, creating efficient and attractive multimodal interchange hubs both within and outside urban areas. Apart from various services (e.g. restaurants, shops and parcel pick-up and drop-off points) within the hubs, the immediate vicinity offers opportunities for spatial development (homes, offices and other amenities). Students will be asked to investigate which function do the (selected) rail-metro stations fulfill in the network and in the environment, now and in the future.

CAMPUS UTOPIAS_ For modernist architects, like Pierre Jeanneret, Giancarlo di Carlo, Vilanova Artigas and James Stirling, the university campus was a challenging experimentation ground. Conceived as a society on its own or a city in small the campus offered administrators, architects and urbanists the opportunity to project some of their most ambitious visions for a better society on the academic community. The course focusses completely on research.

AREA_ Still struggling to provide for their basic needs of shelter, health and income, our planet is suffering from environmental degradation, resource depletion and climate change. The AREA studio will focus on the built environment’s role in this uncertain future and how to improve this toward a habitable planet for humanity.

MAKING_ Making is a special course that combines research and design with a practical hands-on workshop, focused on designing and making objects of concrete with specific, innovative properties and expressions.

INTERACTIVE ARCHITECTURE PROTOTYPES_ The workshop focuses on applying Design-to-Robotic-Production and Operation methods for the development of architectural hybrid assemblies ranging from micro levels, as material systems, to meso and macrolevels as building components and buildings. In this context, hybrid assemblies will be explored by designing and robotically producing a three-dimensional structure that consists of various components assembled into an integrated whole.

Ms3/4 Graduation Studio

BEIRUT
Once called ‘Paris of the East’, the Lebanese capital was devastated by a shocking blast in August 2020, leaving hundreds of fatalities and thousands of injured. Dwellings, public institutions, healthcare facilities and infrastructure were left in shambles. Lebanon had already been facing its worst humanitarian, socioeconomic and financial crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war, leading to widespread protests for political reform in 2019. Exacerbated by the impact of sanctions and dwindling US dollar reserves, as well as the effects of the global pandemic, Lebanon’s economy has been in a free-fall. The recent explosion at the port of Beirut, damaging almost half of the city, is just further compounding the turmoil.
The explosion should be considered as an impetus for change. Parallel to immediate humanitarian relief and early recovery, the city needs to establish long-term measures to return to a path of stability and development. In collaboration with the Lebanese American University and its Institute for Environmental Studies and Research, the studio will address Beirut’s multiple acute challenges, notably its protracted socio-economic crisis, the reconstruction of its urban fabric and the restoration of its heritage taking in consideration the future requirements of a modern and divers society and its role as an (inter-)national cultural, political and economic centre. The graduation studio comprises of both individual and group work, focusing on independent research topics investigated on a shared site. Studio groups develop a vision (design scenario for the designated area) supported by individual project interventions. Students are free to choose thesis topics and are encouraged to develop designs individually, while strongly connecting them to the joint strategy. Upon completion of the MSc3, students will be required to conclude their research by translating it into the design brief. The Msc4 students will provide a design answer to this self created assignment, focussing on context, program and flows, structure, materialization, comfort and climate control on multiple building scales.
