Summer School Translational Neurosciences 'Ageing Brain'

Summer School Translational Neurosciences 'Ageing Brain' at the University of Groningen, Faculty of Medicine. Don’t hesitate to join us!

Are you a (bio-)medical student who is interested in neuroscience and neurology? This year Summer School Translational Neurosciences 'Ageing Brian' will take place in July 2022, in the beautiful city of Groningen in The Netherlands. This year's educational program consists of 5 full days of inspiring and interactive lectures, workshops and field trips covering a broad spectrum of topics like brain anatomy, brain development, neuropathology, neuropsychiatry and ageing research. If you are a motivated student, interested in exploring the frontiers of neuroscience, please submit your application before 17th of April 2022. Summer School Neuroscience of the Aging Brain is looking for a new committee!

Are you following a (bio)medical study and do you enjoy meeting students all over the world? Are you interested in neurology and would you like to organize a fantastic program together with other fellow students?
Then apply for the new committee!

Within the committee you will welcome a group of 25 international students to Groningen in the summer of 2023. In a week's time they will follow an educational and social program, all set up by you and your committee members. The students will learn all about neurology related topics in lectures, workshops and other activities. You also have the chance to set up a fun social program full of outings and drinks. The perfect combination between education and fun!

Last year was another great success, with students from more than 14 different countries and multiple continents taking the program. During the summer school, you will form a close bond with both your committee members and the students. You will come into contact with all kinds of cultures and will have an unforgettable time!

Are you interested? Send your motivation letter (max. 1 A4) and CV to summerschoolageingbrain@rug.nl before 30 September The applications will take place on 6, 7 and 10 October.

At this summer school Translational Neurosciences 'Ageing Brain' there are a few spots reserved for students living in Groningen. This means you can experience the wonderful educational and social programme. You can apply until 1st of June. The accommodation and breakfast is excluded in price, which means the costs for the summer school are €299.

Social Programme

We think it’s very important that you will get to know your fellow participants and connect with eachother, especially during these times. One of the activities of our social programme is an International Cooking Event! A chance for everyone to come together and share their national dishes. During this event you can try new foods, show off your own cooking skills and share your favourite recipes. Good food and delicious drinks are the best way to meet new people.

One of our highlights is a visit to the Animal Lab from the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG):

They are open about their activities and will show you how they conduct animal studies and what they take into consideration in such testing. This is their contribution to the social debate about animal experiments, in which anyone can take a stand based on objective information.

Thinking about taking part of Summer School Translational Neurosciences 'Ageing Brain' in 2022? Here are some reasons why you should attend our Summer School!

1. To gain new skills and knowledge relevant to your field that you did not have a chance to acquire in your education thus far.

2. To gain new experiences and add them to your resume so that your job or higher education applications are more appealing.

3. To expand your network by meeting new peers.The social activities will get you in touch with like-minded students from all over the world, which we think is very valuable in difficult times like these.

4. To expand your network by meeting professors, medical experts and patients. Professors and other medical experts will give you a better understanding of the pathophysiology, the clinical and social aspects of the different disorders. In addition, patients are invited to give their perspectives on living and dealing with their disease, e.g. Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease.

5. To discover Groningen and the Dutch culture. We will also organize a cooking event in which you can get to know different dishes from all over the world and taste some culture! During the last day we will organize a trip to the dutch island Schiermonnikoog. We will hire bikes and enjoy a full day of beach, sun and nature. (The trip to Schiermonnikoog is an optional activity. You can apply for this activity during your application.)

During the Summer School Ageing Brain, the main focus lies on the inspiring educational programme, but there are also a lot of social activities included. Such as: a pub-quiz, laser gaming, a BBQ, a trip to the island of Schiermonnikoog and a lot more!

We think it’s very important that you will get to know your fellow participants and we will make sure you will be able to interact with each other. We will for example organize a cooking event in which you can get to know different dishes from all over the world and taste some culture!

Furthermore, we will organise a dutch game night. During this activity we will teach you traditional games that are a fun way to get to know each other. This is also a great way to learn about the dutch culture. Examples of games are ‘spijkerpoepen’, ‘koekhappen’ and ‘blikgooien’.

You’ll be able to have a little fun and let off steam at the end of a day of boosting your brain with new information. These social activities will also get you in touch with like-minded students from all over the world, which we think is very valuable in difficult times like these.

During the last day we will organize a trip to the Dutch island Schiermonnikoog. Transportation will be by bus and boat. When we arrive we will also hire bikes and enjoy a full day of beach, sun and nature. The trip to Schiermonnikoog is an optional activity. You can apply for this activity during your application.

During the week, participants will dive deeper into different neurological diseases. Professors and other medical experts will give students a better understanding of the pathophysiology, the clinical and social aspects of the different disorders. In addition, patients are invited to give their perspectives on living and dealing with their disease, e.g. Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease.

Group assignments are an integral and critical part of the program and a great way to get to know each other! During these sessions, participants will work in small, multidisciplinary teams. The goal is to improve scientific skills and apply them in developing a solution to medical problems.

Our Story

Welcome everybody! We would like to invite you to participate in this years’ Summer School ‘Ageing Brain’ in Groningen, the Netherlands. Our committee consists of eight enthusiastic medical students and together we will be organizing this Summer School. We are aiming to make it an unforgettable experience for you! During the Summer School, you will be offered a sophisticated educational programme with many interesting lectures, workshops, fieldtrips and challenging assignments. Together with our best professors and doctors we will take you on a journey into the fascinating world of the mind and the central nervous system in general. Apart from clinical topics, scientific research within the field of neurology, with a focus on the “ageing brain”, will play a major role. On top of all this, there will be plenty of time to relax and have fun with other medical students from all over the world. You will get the chance to experience the Dutch culture and Groningen’s vibrant student life. If you are a motivated student, interested in exploring the frontiers of neuroscience, please submit your application before April 1st 2017. The selection of students will be based on a motivation letter, resume and an abstract or literature review. Do not hesitate to send them in and let your neurons fire this summer!
