𝗦𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗵® 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 “𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝘄𝗶𝗽𝗲”
Last year, an important question came into focus: what defines a Medical Device in daily care?

The Dutch Competent Authority (IGJ) reviewed the classification of Swash® products under Regulation (EU) 2017/745 (MDR). 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗵® 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 within the meaning of Article 2 MDR, and the request for enforcement was rejected. One product, Swash® Refreshing Wipes, did not meet the criteria for Medical Device classification and was therefore withdrawn from the market.

𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝘆𝗴𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 [𝟯].

Over the course of this campaign, we have shown why:

• Traditional bathing can compromise skin integrity and act as reservoirs for pathogens [1,2].
• Daily hygiene in healthcare is not just a routine task, it is a clinical intervention with direct impact on patient safety [3].
• Swash® was developed as a Medical Device concept to support safe, daily care at the bedside.

Within this Medical Device framework, Swash® brings together bathing, incontinence care and haircare in one integrated, person-bound, single-use concept designed to support infection prevention every day at the bedside.

In our previous post, we focused on Swash® MD Incontinence products. Today, we turn to another crucial part of daily care: hair washing.

In our last post, we focused on Swash® MD bathing products. Today, we zoom in on incontinence care.

Incontinent patients are at high risk of incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), which is linked to skin breakdown, pain and higher infection risk. Studies show that structured skin care routines with pH-balanced, no-rinse cleansers and a dimethicone barrier significantly reduce IAD compared with traditional cleansing with water and soap [1].

In our last post, we explored the environmental impact of Swash® MD products compared to traditional bed baths. Today, we zoom in on body wash.

In previous posts, we looked at water itself as a source of infection risk in healthcare. Today, we go one step further: 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝘂𝗰𝗲𝘁𝘀.

💧 Sinks and water sources in hospitals have been associated with outbreaks involving multidrug-resistant organisms, particularly in high-risk settings such as intensive care units [1,2].

🦠 Components of the sink, including faucet outlets and aerators, can become reservoirs for microorganisms and contribute to water contamination in hospital environments [2]. At the same time, studies have shown that patient bath basins and traditional bed-bath equipment can become contaminated during routine care, which may create opportunities for cross-contamination between the environment and the patient [3,4].

Studies consistently show that hospital water systems and reusable wash basins can act as hidden reservoirs for pathogens:

• A study found that taps with aerators used for clinical activities were frequently contaminated with opportunistic pathogens, with some microbial levels exceeding recommended thresholds [1].

• In a large multicentre study across 88 hospitals in the US and Canada, 𝟲𝟮.𝟮% of reusable hospital bath basins were contaminated with common hospital pathogens [2].

• Another study found bacterial growth in 𝟵𝟴% of patient bath basins and concluded that bath basins are a reservoir for bacteria and may be a potential source of hospital-acquired infection [3].

Water, taps, aerators and wash basins are therefore not neutral in daily patient care; they can unintentionally contribute to healthcare-associated infections.
