𝗜𝘀 𝗱𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲- 𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗶𝗱?

De productiewaarde van groenten en fruit uit Nederlandse bodem kwam uit op € 5,0 miljard (+2%), terwijl de export steeg naar € 17,8 miljard (+12%). Ook de consumptie in Nederland nam toe met 2%, vooral in fruit. Dit betekent dat de Nederlandse groente- en fruitketen 2025 opnieuw duidelijke groei liet zien.

Deze cijfers onderstrepen het belang van een slimme, efficiënte en weerbare keten. The production value of fruit and vegetables grown on Dutch soil amounted to €5.0 billion (+2%), while exports rose to €17.8 billion (+12%). Consumption in the Netherlands also increased by 2%, particularly in fruit. This means that the Dutch fruit and vegetable chain once again showed clear growth in 2025.

These figures underline the importance of a smart, efficient, and resilient chain. 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿

Last week, we welcomed 40 honors students from Rotterdam School of Management (Erasmus University Rotterdam) to Tomatoworld for the Westland Challenge.
Working in teams, they tackled current ecosystem and innovation issues in greenhouse horticulture, and they will conclude the challenge next week with presentations at World Horti Center.

It was great fun to have the students visit us and experience their fresh perspective and energy in the greenhouse and field lab.

This quote from a visitor highlights a recognizable point of attention that was discussed during the NXTGEN Hightech Demo Day Data and Infrastructure at Tomatoworld.

Between demonstrations of technologies such as the Data Lab, the Digital Twin, and various data applications, conversations arose about how data can be used carefully and effectively within collaborations.

It shows that utilizing data in greenhouse horticulture requires not only technology, but also clear agreements and mutual understanding. In this way, data is gradually converted into insights that add real value in practice.

Together with Greenwear, we are taking another practical step towards more sustainable operations in the horticultural sector.

At Tomatoworld, innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. Since recently, we have started using Greenwear’s reusable hairnets in our greenhouse. These hairnets are washable and can be reused up to 500 times, just like their sustainable coveralls.

By replacing thousands of single-use hairnets with a durable alternative, we reduce waste and lower operational costs, without compromising on hygiene or safety. A relatively small adjustment, with clear impact for daily practice, the environment, and the future of horticulture.

Just like fresh tomatoes, canned chopped tomatoes contribute to the recommended 250 grams of vegetables per day.

𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙞𝙥:
Leftovers? Store chopped tomatoes in an airtight container for up to 2 days in the fridge. Freezing is also possible; they keep for up to 3 months in the freezer.

What are you gonna use them for?
A comforting soup, or do you prefer a Mediterranean shakshuka?

At Tomatoworld, we also offer guided tours for children. In our field lab, students discover in a playful way how tomatoes grow in a high-tech greenhouse, how technology helps with sustainable cultivation, and why healthy eating is important.

From bumblebees in the greenhouse to tasting different tomato varieties: learning by seeing, doing, and experiencing. The tour ties in with the curriculum and can be tailored to themes such as climate, energy, water, and food.
