Afgelopen donderdag stond Tomatoworld volledig in het teken van de circulaire kas. Telers en experts gingen met elkaar in gesprek over slim hergebruik van warmte, water en nutriรซnten op basis van wat de plant รฉcht nodig heeft.

Met inzichten van onze sprekers, waaronder meteoroloog Reinier Van Den Berg, Feije de Zwart, Remy Maat, Ruud Schulte, Irma Steemers-Rijkse, Gabriรซl van der Kruijk en Rene Beerkens ontvingen telers een compleet beeld van duurzame teeltinnovaties รฉn concrete stappen om water-, energie- en voedingsstromen te optimaliseren.

Last Thursday, Tomatoworld was all about the circular greenhouse. Growers and experts discussed the smart reuse of heat, water, and nutrients based on what plants really need.

With insights from our speakers, including meteorologist Reinier Van Den Berg, Feije de Zwart, Remy Maat, Ruud Schulte, Irma Steemers-Rijkse, Gabriรซl van der Kruijk, and Rene Beerkens, growers gained a complete picture of sustainable cultivation innovations and concrete steps to optimize water, energy, and nutrient flows.

During a two-day innovation journey, 36 pharmacists from InnovatietripNL visited Tomatoworld to explore the link between health, nutrition and innovation. In between visits to PostNL, Microsoft and Blue City, they stepped into our greenhouse where the future of food is being cultivated.

We guided them through the latest innovations in data-driven cultivation and robotics, offering a glimpse of how technology supports sustainable food production. In inspiring sessions with Caring Doctors and EatThis, we explored how healthcare and nutrition are increasingly intertwined.

Of course, there was also time to taste the future, with tomatoes harvested straight from our high-tech greenhouse. The visit ended with fresh ideas, new connections and a shared group photo to capture the moment.

A true cross-pollination between healthcare and horticulture. Because a healthy future starts at the source: our food.

At Tomatoworld, tomato cultivation is driven by science, sensors and sustainability. A recent article by German news outlet NRZ highlights how weโ€™re transforming greenhouse farming with data, robotics and modern lighting.

As our guide Ton van Spronsen explains:

What do a harvesting robot, a digital twin, and a tomato plant have in common?

More than you might thinkโ€ฆ

During the NXTGEN Hightech Agrifood Demo Day at Tomatoworld, it became clear that mathematics is the silent force behind smart, sustainable horticulture.

In a fully packed session, Platform Wiskunde Nederland (PWN) shared how models, algorithms and simulations are driving innovation inside the greenhouse. Researchers from Wageningen University & Research revealed how digital twins โ€“ virtual copies of real greenhouses โ€“ can simulate the optimal growing strategy for new plant varieties. Not in years, but now.

Perhaps even more striking: not just growers, but suppliers play a key role in scaling these innovations. One smart solution can reach hundreds of growers through the right partner.

โ€œI had no idea horticulture was this innovative,โ€ said Mark Roest from PWN. And thatโ€™s exactly what we show at Tomatoworld where science meets practice, and data transforms into impact.

Nice interaction between growers and tech partners โ†”๏ธ. We discussed topics like: what is 5G currently enabling in the greenhouse and how will this evolve in the future ๐Ÿ”ฎ? How will robots learn to pick tomatoes? How do we monitor insects? What are the ideal conditions for bumblebees๐Ÿ? Does the 5G signal affect the plants ๐ŸŒฑ? And, extremely important: what is needed to safeguard privacy-sensitive data ๐Ÿ”’?

Wat als de arbeidstekort van vandaag de innovatiekracht van morgen wordt...? ๐Ÿ’ก

Tijdens het Partnercafรฉ op 16 oktober stond รฉรฉn vraag centraal:

"Hoe zetten we de krapte op de arbeidsmarkt om in kracht voor de glastuinbouw?"

De sessies lieten zien hoeveel kennis, betrokkenheid en oplossingsgerichtheid er in de sector aanwezig is. Van het versterken van de samenwerking tussen onderwijs en bedrijfsleven tot het benutten van technologie en robotisering om mensen juist beter te ondersteunen.

Deelnemers gingen niet alleen met nieuwe inzichten naar huis, maar ook met concrete ideeรซn voor vervolgacties. Want de toekomst van de sector vraagt om samenwerking tussen bedrijven, onderwijs, overheid รฉn jongeren die kiezen voor deze mooie sector.
