Muschiul are ca rol principal contractarea. Atunci cand nu este folosit, se relaxeaza, dar isi pastreaza totusi tonusul muscular.

Atunci cand apare contractura musculara, apare si o hipertrofie permanenta a unui mu**hi sau a unor grupe musculare, tonusul creste mult si astfel provoaca o tensiune intramusculara crescuta si constanta, care preseaza pe vasele si capilarele intramusculare determinand o deficienta circulatorie intramusculara. Aceasta duce la o ipoxie musculara (slaba oxigenare a mu**hiului). Acumularea de CO2 in mu**hi provoaca durere.
