My well-being skill

My well-being skill From tension, stress & fatigue. To flexibility, relaxation & energy.
🌱 💧🌞
Breathe. Move. Shine. 🌿 Nice to meet you! An opportunity to launch my own company!

Hi, my name is Hélène, Frenchie EXPAT in the NL, well-being coach & yoga teacher! I spent 7 YEARS as an EXECUTIVE in ENGINEERING, first as a project engineer and then as a project manager. Then I moved to the Netherlands to live with my partner. So, I understand the problems of both worlds, salaried employment and self-entrepreneurship. I used to be ANXIOUS. I worried and stressed all the time. I had ten thousand thoughts a second going through my head. They prevented me from concentrating or living in the moment. I was always afraid I wouldn't be up to the task of managing my responsibilities, socializing or saving those around me from their problems.

I used to cope with a smile on my face, looking enthusiastic and happy. But the truth was that INSIDE, I was SUFFERING in silence. I was often slumped over. I felt depressed. I had a constant knot in my back. I experienced intense emotions and sometimes even panic attacks.

I BELIEVED IN GIVING IT ALL at work, at play and to those around me. I worked long hours, tried to please everyone and forgot myself. To survive, I'd let off steam with an intense jog every now and then, or dance my ass off in nightclubs. At first, I felt relieved and happy, but very quickly...

It was a DESCENT INTO HELL! My emotions were overwhelming me. Stress, tension and negative emotions were returning. I was regularly blocked by back pain, so I went to see a doctor. After a follow-up visit to a physiotherapist or osteopath, bingo, relief! But soon afterwards, my mind would be tormented again and my suffering would come rushing back. None of this solved my underlying problems. In 2018, I tried YOGA (a second time). I confess, I was SKEPTICAL! I didn't think it was fast-paced and intense enough for me. Plus, I wasn't supple and comfortable enough in my own body to feel at ease in this well-decorated studio, amongst all these well-dressed chicks in their trendy yogi outfits. And yet, I pushed open the door of this class. And my beliefs were shattered. This gentle activity was good for my body and allowed me to put my brain down. The BENEFITS were UNSUSPECTED: no more knots in my back, relaxation, emptiness in my head. I felt so energized and motivated that I wanted to sing the song of life and dance the night away! Practicing YOGA once a week HAS CHANGED MY LIFE. My stress level has decreased. I don't have aches and pains like I used to. I'm more serene. And I can concentrate more easily at work. I have the energy to enjoy the hobbies that make me tick (singing, salsa). In 2019, I decide to TREAT THE CAUSES OF MY WOES. I begin psychotherapy and read personal development books. In 2020, my Cartesian engineering mind wants to understand why yoga helps me so much. I train and discover a PASSION FOR YOGA. I realize that the human body and mind are incredibly complex machines that need to be nurtured and maintained. Like a car or a bicycle, they need to be cleaned, checked, serviced and repaired. Three yoga training courses have given me a great toolbox for taking care of myself and avoiding repeated breakdowns. Today, I LIVE IN WELL-BEING because :

- I manage my stress better. I identify my tensions and release them on my own. I face challenges with serenity and greater self-confidence. I find a state of relaxation more quickly and easily after the state of alertness.

- I move my body every day. I adapt according to my energy and desire: a yoga practice to suit me, a walk in my neighbourhood or in nature, an improvised dance at home. Movement is liberating!

- I act on what I can control. And I let go of what I can't control. If I need treatment or support, I consult someone. But I feel so much more armed and autonomous to take care of myself than before.

- I leave myself alone! I am kind to myself. I express my emotions. I say "no" sometimes. I'm perfectly imperfect! And I laugh about it! I accept myself as I am, I stop comparing myself to others. I improve what I can! YOU CAN LIVE THIS TRANSFORMATION TOO! Take action now:

Why refuse late people in my class? ↓

As long as the delay is reasonable and they sneak in descreetly during the begining of my yoga class, it’s fine for me!

Why? Because everyone has its own challenges making us run late (unexpected trafic jam, last minute hazard, meeting running late, work deadline to be met). Of course, it’s not ideal as they cannot benefit from the initial relaxation, breath work and complete warm-up.

But what can I say? Sometimes this delay is completely out of my students’ control. Sometimes, it’s my students deliberated choice of priorities. First, there is no point in having a student stressed out to arrive on time and start practicing yoga in that state! Life is too short to diminish people’s life expectancy with more stress. Second, it would be a pity that they are deprived of yoga as moving their body & taking care of their mind is so beneficial.

Don't you agree?

Ever felt your back tightening because you're the "Late Rabbit"? I did. ↓

Picture this: My bus never arrived. I was running late for work and had to improvise. Cue the stress! But before I let it consume me, I took a deep breath, reminded myself that it was okay and I warned.

When everything seems to be spiraling out of control, stress can sneak up on us. Life often throws unexpected curveballs, but learning to manage it can make all the difference. Here's the deal: Instead of tightening your back and jaw, it's time to embrace the art of letting go. Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, focus on what you can control. In my case, I have tried relaxing, finding an alternate route, calling a friend for help and simply accepting that I would be late.

Life's unpredictable moments are opportunities for growth. When stress tries to take the wheel, reclaim control by practicing mindfulness and self-compassion. Treat yourself with kindness, acknowledging that it's normal to feel overwhelmed at times. Remember, it's not about avoiding stress altogether, but rather how we respond to it. Yoga & personal development helped me to develop better stress management.

Empower yourself to navigate life's twists and turns with resilience in my program ‘The path to well-being’ (link in bio). It will help you let go of stress's tight grip!

Tell me in the comments: in which situation did you find yourself in the "Late Rabbit" scenario?

The danger of throwing your head back! ⚠️Neck hyperextension is more than discomfort – it can lead to injuries and impact your health.

In normal alignment, the neck has a soft lordotic curve. Hyperextension compresses facet joints, damages cartilage, pinches nerves, and reduces blood circulation to the brain, risking injury from falls. Many yoga practitioners including me and my students lack upper-body flexibility from desk slumping. So I never invite head-hanging to prevent compression. If your breastbone is nearly parallel to the ceiling in chest openers, you could consider hanging your head back without compression but not the majority can do it. Place your fingers behind your neck, slowly tilt your head back. When you feel the back of your skull pressing against your fingers, your neck is hyperextended. So don’t go that far! Learn to safely dump the slump without risking injuries in my program (link in bio).

I'd like to highlight a concerning article on the dangers of prolonged sitting at work, where the Dutch excel. The piece recommends incorporating five minutes of exercise every hour, shedding light on the fact that over 25% of the Dutch spend more than 8.5 hours sitting daily. This sedentary lifestyle poses significant health risks, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depressive symptoms, and certain forms of cancer.

The statistics reveal that the Dutch surpass the European average, with 26% sitting for over 8.5 hours daily. Despite being crowned sitting champions in 2018, subsequent efforts have been made to address this issue.

Implementing brief, non-sweat-inducing exercises for five minutes every hour within the workplace has shown positive outcomes like reduced absenteeism and increased energy levels among employees.

However, fostering a healthy work environment requires a shared responsibility between employers and employees. With remote work becoming increasingly prevalent, finding innovative ways to support employees in maintaining an active lifestyle is paramount.

I encourage you to reflect on the insights shared in this article. Share your thoughts in the comments!

And explore my initiative "The Path to Well-being" (link in bio): a program to help you prioritize movement and well-being in your daily life. Let's combat the hazards of prolonged sitting together.

Are stress and back pain affecting your productivity? I personally cannot focus and deliver as efficiently when I suffer from stress or pain. Recent research suggests that a yoga-based intervention might be the solution.

In a study* conducted in a British local government authority, participants were divided into a yoga group and a control group. The yoga group attended weekly Yoga sessions, while the control group received no intervention.

Results showed that the yoga group experienced significant reductions in perceived stress and back pain, coupled with a remarkable improvement in psychological well-being. The end-programme scores revealed lower levels of perceived stress, back pain, sadness, and hostility in the yoga group, along with higher levels of feeling self-assured, attentive, and serene compared to the control group.

This study highlights the positive impact of a workplace yoga intervention, providing valuable insights for enhancing overall well-being.

Breath as a Lifesaver: Navigating a Cat Attack with Yoga Wisdom. I’m not joking! Recently, a friend graciously lent us her apartment, with the only request being to care for her cat in return. What was intended to be a simple exchange turned into a moment of intense stress when the cat, likely agitated by the presence of strangers in the absence of its owner, responded with hisses, scratches, and bites.

As the feline frenzy unfolded, my heart raced, and my breath quickened. Fear gripped me, mirroring the cat's heightened anxiety, escalating its aggressive behavior. Seeking refuge, I retreated to the bathroom. It was in this stressful situation that the invaluable tool of controlled breathing, learned through yoga, came to my rescue.

In the practice of yoga, I've cultivated the ability to regain mental calmness through the breath. In this instance, it proved instrumental. I consciously slowed down my breathing to soothe my nervous system and regain composure. While the likelihood of finding oneself in a similar situation is undoubtedly slim, the message I wish to convey is that, no matter the stress-inducing challenge, yoga can be a guiding light to overcome it. My program can help you manage stress better in any situation (consult the link in my bio).

End of story: Out of respect for the animal's well-being and my own, I chose to spend the night elsewhere. P.S. No animals were harmed.
