🌳Taking a break🌳

In a space where intensity is often celebrated, we rarely talk about the power of pausing.

In the latest Practice Lazet Journal, I reflect on how taking a break from ceremony can sometimes be the most supportive next step in your integration journey.

More is not always better.
Sometimes it is space that allows insight to mature.
Sometimes it is time that turns experience into embodied change.

Over the past weeks, several clients have chosen to pause their next ceremony. Not because something is wrong, but because something is ready to deepen.

And I recognise that path myself.

🌿Practicing over Consuming🌿

My clients fall into 3 different categories:

1)A large number of the clients who come to me for integration support take longer, indefinite breaks in between their Plant Medicine ceremonies to work on making lasting changes in their lives.

2)A smaller number don’t feel called to further commune with Plant Medicine anymore or feel that this one retreat gave enough to integrate (I have a client still working with his ceremony experiences of over 2 decades ago).

3)A growing number find themselves intuitively drawn to continue working with Plant Medicine and start developing a more frequent ceremony ‘practice’.

I started to fall into the third category myself over a decade ago…

And I can recommend ‘landing’ at the ceremony setting that you are intuitively drawn to because it ignites your (personal, spiritual) growth and development. And to stay there to study the lineage. Be humble. Open yourself up to learn. Grow ‘spiritual roots’. And contribute by supporting the people and wider community involved in this brave work.

After connecting with different indigenous Plant Medicine lineages, I found my spiritual home (and family) in the Umbanda religious tradition from Brazil🇧🇷 where I have been a student ever since.

I can honestly say that arriving there has been an enormous adventure (don’t worry I promise to write a book about it someday).

Coming back to Plant Medicine over and over again is not something you ‘plan’ and it is not for everyone (to put it mildly).

The large majority of my clients need a while before feeling ready to come back to another ceremony again. If they do at all.

Only a few find themselves intuitively coming back and developing a spiritual path in close connection with entheogenic Plant Teachers.

Looking back, my relationship with Plant Medicine has evolved to ‘practicing’ instead of mere ‘consuming’ and this is giving meaning to my life in more ways than I can express with words.

🙌🏼Ambassadors of my work🙌🏼

"Thanks to Marijntje's support, I now understand much better what those last two ceremonies were trying to show me. I feel more calm, trust, and softness around my themes".

These words come from a client who just completed the 3-month deepening path in somatic integration that I offer. After two very intense ayahuasca ceremonies, she found herself stuck in confusion and anxiety around themes that had surfaced. What followed was a process of slowing down, making sense of what had been touched, and gently bringing it back into daily life.

Sometimes the most meaningful reflections on my work don’t come from me, but from the people I’ve had the privilege to walk alongside.

What I recognise in her words is something I see often in integration work: the importance of having space where nothing needs to be forced, fixed, or directed, and where the process can unfold at its own pace.

I truly believe that my clients are the best ambassadors of what this work can bring. Her words speak more clearly than anything I could write myself.

I currently have new openings for those who feel drawn to this kind of deeper integration work.

✋🏻No full cup✋🏻

We live in interesting times, as a growing number of people are coming into contact with Plant Medicine🌿🍄🌵: powerful and sacred catalysts for growth and change.

With the heightened attention being placed on this fascinating, magical and complex field, it’s becoming even more important to keep emphasising that Plant Medicine:

– are not a “magic bullet”
– are not for everybody (to say the least)
– should be handled with great care, respect and humility

Also, when considering working with them, do your research:

– Which Plant Medicine is calling you, and why?
– What are its contra-indications?

And, just as importantly:

– Do I feel ready?
– Or do I need more time to prepare and create the right circumstances for this possibly life-altering experience?

Earlier today, during a preparation support session with a client, we touched upon another important topic:

🙅🏻‍♀️You don’t have to drink a full cup.

What I mean by this is that you can always alter the amount of Plant Medicine you ingest. You don’t have to go for a full or high dose if this doesn’t feel right for you (right now).

You are always in the driver’s seat.

Take your time to tune into your intuition and be very, very honest with what you feel is best for you in this moment, instead of what you think is “right or wrong” or what you believe others expect from you.

Earlier today, I guided my client through a somatic meditation exercise that she will bring into her upcoming ceremony weekend, to help her feel rather than think her way into this important decision-making process.

Over the years, I’ve learned (and was taught by my spiritual mentors) that more is not necessarily better.

It is very well possible to have deeply impactful ceremony experiences while working with small or smaller dosages. And if you’re mainly working with Plant Medicine for spiritual purposes (as I am), larger dosages might not even be required, or helpful, anymore.

At the end of the day, your body knows.

Sit.
Close your eyes.
Breathe.
Take your time and listen.

Am I going to say yes to a full cup, or not?

📝Yesterday’s Practice Lazet Journal grew into something more than planned📝

After the monthly Connection & Integration circle, where I was asked to speak about creating an altar as an integration practice, this theme wanted more space.

The result is an extended Journal on this integration practice, including a practical way to begin.

🏮You can receive this special edition of the Practice Lazet Journal by sending me a DM with ‘Journal’ or joining via the website: www.practicelazet.com

⭐️The new Practice Lazet Journal went out today⭐️.

In this edition, I write about integration in relationship and how being with family or loved ones, especially around the Christmas holidays, can bring up mixed feelings, old patterns or moments of friction after ceremony.

It’s a theme that often comes up in my work, particularly when inner change is still fresh and finding its way into everyday life. For many, this time can feel tender, confusing and even lonely at times.

I’m also sharing a podcast episode I took part in about Ayahuasca and Plant Medicine integration, which felt fitting to revisit at this time of year, when many of us slow down a little and have space to listen.

Thank you for allowing me to share your story and experience working with me🙏🏻

I often forget to ask clients for a testimonial, yet their reflections hold such value.

They show you what can unfold in this work and remind me why sharing matters. So this time, I’m choosing not to stay the best kept secret😉

This reflection comes from a wise soul who’s in her thirties and it’s wonderful to see how people of all ages find their way to my practice and work: from under twenty to well over seventy.

🎭Setting the stage🎭

Preparation is one of the most overlooked phases for those who say ‘yes’ to a psychedelic ceremony, workshop or retreat.

Many people focus on what comes after the experience, grounding insights and weaving intentions into daily life.

As a Counsellor specialised in integrating Plant Medicine experiences, I welcome that attention wholeheartedly, yet this is not the whole story.

Some years ago, at the end of the ICEERS integration training program, Marc Aixalà shared that after all his years in this field, he sensed that the way you prepare may even matter more than how you integrate afterwards.

I agree with him.

Preparing well, whether you work alone, with a therapist or in a group setting, shapes not only the ceremony itself but also how you land afterwards.

Tomorrow, I will join a three-day ceremony to support participants who will step into deep work with Ayahuasca. During a recent preparation session, a client said:

“I think I’ve entered the sacred room before the ceremony. I notice that I zoom out of conversations more often, that I question my own behaviour and that I look for deeper meanings. More than anything, I feel more emotional and drawn to step back and be with myself.”

As she spoke, I recognized the signs: She had entered the pre-ceremony phase. There is a well known saying that the ceremony begins the moment you decide to join (sometimes even months before). As my client added herself “This is when you begin to set the stage”.

Many people preparing for ceremony with Plant Medicine notice a pull to take more time for themselves, journal, draw or meditate. These impulses are invitations to slow down and tune in. I encourage clients to listen to these signals and create space for the practices that help them open up for their journey.

There is a lot of emphasis on integration and on the life that unfolds after ceremony.

Yet the preparation phase also offers a powerful 'window of opportunity': entering it consciously and with intent can deepen and enhance the quality of your experience.

In the preparation sessions I offer, we take time to slow down and explore what is present for you. This may include intuitively setting a theme or intention, sharing supportive preparation tips, learning body-focused tools to help you stay grounded during ‘peak experiences’ or simply having space to voice questions or uncertainties.

Preparing well is a way of honouring yourself, the journey ahead and the return home afterwards.

♥️About integration and loved ones♥️

In my work with clients, I find that the support and understanding of loved ones play a significant role in how integration unfolds after a ceremony.

Coming home from a psychedelic experience can bring new insights, sensitivities and inspirations, but also distance and friction. Family members might feel overwhelmed, confused, or unsure how to relate to what has changed. This is natural, as transformation rarely happens at the same pace for everyone.

As I often share in my integration sessions, it is common for loved ones to struggle to understand or keep up with the changes that follow Plant Medicine work. They may not know how to relate or may simply need more time to adjust. Giving them that time and space helps ease the process for everyone. There may be moments when you feel less understood or less connected. Over time, this can shift again as a new balance takes shape.

Much of integration is about taking care of yourself, finding rest, reflection and grounding in what was opened. Yet it also includes tending to how these changes take root within your home and relationships. Those who carried on with their routines, work and responsibilities while you were away are part of the same web of life you are returning to.

Sharing your process gently and giving space for where they are can make integration into a more mutual experience. An invitation for connection, understanding and shared growth.

🩸Thicker than water🩸

As we enter the final days of October, often seen as a spiritually charged time, many traditions honour those who came before us. Across cultures, people light candles, offer food or flowers and remember their ancestors, from Samhain to Día de los Mu***os.

In the coming days, I will also hold a ritual at my home altar to honour my lineage, shown in the picture above. One of my Umbanda mentors often says, “If you don’t know where you come from, you don’t know where you’re going.”

The theme of this post is ‘Family, thicker than water’. Inspired by this time of remembrance, it reflects on how our roots and the people closest to us shape the way we integrate what ceremony brings after coming home.

Because in my work with clients, I find that the support and understanding of loved ones play a significant role in how integration unfolds after a ceremony.
