Melkproductie en opbrengst bij kolven besproken.
The amount of breast milk that you can pump (yield) is not an indication of the amount of milk that you are making (supply).
It is only an indication of how much you can pump, at that time, from that breast, with that pump.
Some women respond well to pumping, some do not respond as well.
Breast milk is made on a supply and demand basis. In the very first hours and days after your baby is born milk production is mostly hormone driven.
Frequent breast stimulation and milk removal set up the lactation hormone systems to continue making milk on demand. With newborns, frequent means really really frequent. At least 10 times in 24h. â°Wake them if you need to. đDuring the night is really important too. âš
Thoseđ hormones đare released when you are skin to skin, smelling, touching and holding your baby. Your body knows the difference between a baby and a pump.
Thatâs why itâs worth trying pumping on one side when you are feeding on the other if you want to increase your yield. Or having a video of your baby laughing or crying or something that smells of them if you are pumping when you are apart. Use your hands before, during and after using the pump. Check out âhands on pumpingâ online for tips.
If you are pumping to up your supply, first work on your babies latch, get support from someone who will watch a whole feed and not just say âoh that latch looks goodâ . Start breast compression and switch feeding to increase the amount of active milk transfer.
This approach can be more effective than pumping, especially if you are someone that doesnât respond well to expressing. đ
You canât measure how much milk a breastfed baby is getting by measuring how much their mum can express after a feed. You canât measure your supply by measuring your yield.
Every drop of your milk is precious and a huge achievement.
