The young people at Yes We Can have become stuck in life. Within themselves. In their minds. In society. At the clinic, they work hard every day on their recovery, but they all share one thing: for ten weeks, they have no phone.

No endless scrolling to numb your thoughts. No constant comparison. That sounds like a huge challenge – especially now that the number of young people coming to Yes We Can with a social media addiction has doubled in recent years.

“I was only focused on not disappointing other people. As long as they didn’t have to worry about me, I felt like I wasn’t a burden to them. I reached a point where I no longer wanted to keep living this way. I was exhausted. I couldn’t go on anymore.”

To the outside world, everything seemed to be in place, but on the inside former fellow Fleur felt alone and saw no way forward. At Yes We Can, a process of letting go, being truly seen, and learning to trust yourself again began — for both Fleur and her mother Bianca. Not because everything is perfect now, but because they have both learned that it’s okay when things aren’t perfect sometimes. 💙

“I was using two to three nitrous oxide tanks a day. At a certain point, my tongue was burned and paralysed, and I had no feeling in my legs anymore. When I later ended up in hospital, the doctor told me that if I had carried on like that for much longer, I wouldn’t have survived.”

In the news bulletin of the French broadcaster France 2, former fellow Selina and colleague Derek speak about the dangers of nitrous oxide. Although nitrous oxide has been banned in the Netherlands since 2022, Derek says the ban has little effect as long as it remains freely accessible in neighbouring countries such as Belgium and Germany.

During this month, symptoms of depression often become more noticeable or harder to manage. Depression is not just feeling down – it can affect school, friendships, family life and self-confidence.

“When I had completely given up hope, I found my way to Yes We Can. Since leaving the clinic, my life has begun to blossom. I learned how my thoughts and behaviour work – something I am grateful for every single day. Change is possible. It isn’t easy, and it certainly doesn’t happen as quickly as we would like. But as long as you keep going every day, you’ll get there.”
