MORE THAN PUTTING A BANDAID ON IT

Most first aid kits currently are made of plastics and when the contents expires the whole kit is often discarded. Vanderputte Medical is a large distributors of medical emergency equipment. WAACS used their eco-design tools to assess the environmental impact of plastic first aid kits to create a sustainable alternative.

We look back to a great ART week during ART Rotterdam, where we showed Reinier Lagendijk's artworks in our studio.

Artist Reinier Lagendijk, born in 1969, specializes in crafting sculptures, installations, and pieces for public spaces. Currently residing and working in the South of France. His sculptures and installations, imbued with a temporal nature, intricately mirror the cycles of nature itself – from growth to decline.

T.B.T.

We have been quite busy the last few months. In- between working on fantastic projects for various (new) clients, we have celebrated our 30th birthday and our studio moved from the heart of Rotterdam to Rotterdam’s national design icon the Van Nelle Factory.

We entered an illuminating light industrial space, previously used as a gallery. With the help of Ateliers197 we transformed the white cube into a studio with all facilities needed for doing our design work. By re-using the interior design elements from the old studio we have created a sustainable, warm and creative workplace.

WAACS is located in building 8, Technical Service. You are most welcome for a cup of coffee and to take a look!

Waacs Crew on Tour!
This week WAACS was visiting the IDE Business fair at TU Delft.
While our designers were scouting new talent, our trainees Jane Koorevaar and Pim Van de Geijn prepared heart-shaped poffertjes for all students passing by.

Look at the line! We definitely can say, that our vegan poffertjes were a hit!

For students that have missed us and our delicious poffertjes, next month we are attending the IPO Business fair at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. We hope to see you there!

Happy Zuniversary: 15 years ago that Zune was launched.

While its success was short lived and it was never released in the Netherlands, we are happy to have been part of the development of Zune. Back in 2008 we were asked by Microsoft to do ideation and build demos of future applications for their Zune platform. It was a blast to work together with Steve Kaneko, Carl Ledbetter and their team in Redmond! Meanwhile, some of the applications that we came up with back then, can now be found in products that are developed and released by other tech and media companies. Proof that our ideas were on the right tracks at least.

In the highlight you see geek-blogger and tech-hacker Mark Hoekstra (RIP) who helped us build a basic prototype for a silent disco application for Zune.

WAACS designed a new design identity for AMSC’s windmill convertor cabinets. Enhanced product semantics create a better understanding the functions (and dangers) of various parts inside the convertor cabinets. This increases safety and also results in a more appealing product identity.

For AMCS, WAACS developed a design identity for high power, wind technology converter cabinets. Sustainable and functional design.

Last week we (quietly) celebrated 29 years since WAACS was founded 30 April 1992. This week we also happened to assign project number 1000.

We couldn’t find any record of project number one. It’s probably the launch party back in 1992. But Senseo had project number 241 and 380 became Alberto Alessi’s wild card. The Gauguin exhibition in Van Gogh museum has number 388 and 603 was the last interior project we did as studio: Fotomuseum Rotterdam. With project 445 we turned the deodorant roller upside down and with project 692 we turned it into a paint roller for children. 464 was our first project for Microsoft in Redmond and 511 first project for Henkel in Düsseldorf; 591 our first project in China and for 962 we traveled to Colombia. We will never be able to show the great stuff we did on Zune in project 666 and for Tomtom in project 807. The only times we had to go to court was in projects 241 and 591 (and were proven right twice). Project 633 is probably the best oven mitten in the world and we developed it pro bono for the Pameijer foundation in Rotterdam. The last time we flew to a client was for 970 and 974 was our first project in complete lockdown.

We look forward to celebrating 3 decades of WAACS designs with lot’s of hugs, kisses and kudos next year 29 April 2022!
