Fewer than 10% of people in need of low vision rehabilitation (LVR) care utilize the service. Due to a lack of LVR service awareness by the general population, the outpatient US care delivery models typically follow the pipeline of patient identification by the ophthalmologist or optometrist, recommendation and referral to LVR service by the clinician, and service utilization by the patient.

Findings of a study led by Judith Goldstein, O.D. suggest that implementing a clinical decision support system (CDSS) in eye care coupled with onsite service provision may improve utilization of low vision care. The findings were published in JAMA Network. Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, and its worsening is most often monitored with visual field (VF) testing. Deep learning models (DLM) may help identify VF worsening consistently and reproducibly.

A study from our full member Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine investigated by Jithin Yohannan, M.D., M.P.H.; Jasdeep Sabharwal, M.D., Ph.D.; Chris Bradley, Ph.D.; Pradeep Ramulu, M.D., Ph.D., the Sheila K. West Professor of Ophthalmology and colleagues demonstrated that a deep learning model trained on a consensus of methods can identify visual field worsening and could help clinicians during routine clinical care.

I am well into my second month as a member of WAEH and am already feeling I have been here much longer, which is great! From my short time at WAEH 16th Annual meeting, I have been impressed by the friendliness of everyone. Thank you to all who have made me feel most welcome!

I am also impressed with the focus on sharing ideas and improving efficiency in eye care. The hard work and commitment of WAEH members is evident and certainly focussed on delivering the best and most safe ophthalmic care.

Publication by WAEH Member UCSF – Department of Ophthalmology

Telehealth increased across various specialties during the COVID-19 pandemic. Combining teleophthalmic visits with asynchronous testing suggested that this approach is feasible for subspecialty-level evaluation. Additional study is needed to evaluate whether asynchronous testing outside the same institution could provide an effective and lasting approach for expanding the reach of ophthalmic telehealth.

Telehealth in ophthalmology has traditionally focused on preventive disease screening with limited use in outpatient evaluation. The unique conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic afforded the opportunity to evaluate different implementations of teleophthalmology at scale, providing insight into expanding teleophthalmology care.

11/01/2023

The majority of cataract, and some glaucoma eye surgeries are undertaken using local anaesthetic and can be uncomfortable for patients and make them feel anxious. This can be very unpleasant and cause anxiety in patients. Moorfields Eye Hospitals UAE uses volunteers in a ā€œhand‐holdingā€ role to provide comfort and support to patients undergoing operations.

This role was introduced in 2019 and by 2020 there were twelve trained volunteers working for the trust. Due to the Covid‐19 pandemic most of these volunteers stood down from the role, but there has consistently been at least two volunteers providing ā€œhand‐holdingā€ support since the role was introduced. The variation in the number of available volunteers over time has meant that it hasn’t always been possible to provide those who request it with volunteer support. Where volunteer availability is low, access is determined by whether, or not, an operation takes place in a theatre where a volunteer has been placed. To help evaluate this volunteer intervention data collection was introduced during the Volunteering Innovators Programme (VIP) 1 and has continued ever since.
