How diet affects your eyesight and reduces the risk of retinal diseases, according to a study !!
For nearly two decades, the Alienor study, conducted by the University of Bordeaux (France), followed nearly 10,000 volunteers over the age of 65. These participants underwent eye exams every two to three years, over a period of 18 years.
๐๐ก๐ ๐ ๐จ๐๐ฅ : to better understand how our lifestyle, and particularly our diet, influences eye health and the development of diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

This diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, and fish, and low in meat and dairy products, provides essential nutrients for eye health. Among them, long-chain omega-3s, carotenoids, and certain antioxidant vitamins play a crucial role in protecting the retina and optic nerve.
Our retina, in fact, is particularly rich in omega-3. The polyphenols present in ๐ค๐ก๐๐ซ๐ ๐ค๐๐ก also help protect retinal cells against oxidative stress.
Another key : the macular pigment, which filters blue light. It is made from lutein and zeaxanthin, present in ๐๐ง๐๐๐ฃ ๐ซ๐๐๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ก๐๐จ (spinach, peas, broccoli, asparagus) and certain ๐ฎ๐๐ก๐ก๐ค๐ฌ/๐ค๐ง๐๐ฃ๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ช๐๐ฉ๐จ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ก๐๐จ (corn, clementine, pumpkin), as well as in eggs.

The study also highlights the importance of vitamins A, C, and E, essential for the proper functioning of the retina, as well as zinc, selenium, and protein, necessary for the regeneration of eye cells. Conversely, ๐๐ญ๐๐๐จ๐จ๐๐ซ๐ ๐จ๐ช๐๐๐ง ๐๐ค๐ฃ๐จ๐ช๐ข๐ฅ๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ ๐๐ฃ๐๐ง๐๐๐จ๐๐จ ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐ง๐๐จ๐ ๐ค๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ ๐ง๐๐ฉ๐๐ฃ๐ค๐ฅ๐๐ฉ๐๐ฎ, while good hydration and moderation in coffee and alcohol consumption help preserve vision. Maintaining a healthy weight is also essential for reducing the risks associated with diabetes.

Although data collection for the Alienor study is ended in 2024, its findings will continue to fuel research thanks to a unique biobank and database. Collaborations are underway with other large French cohorts to further explore the links between the retina and the brain. And the story continues: in 2026, a new cohort called "Clรฉmence" will be launched to study children's visual health, in the context of a global myopia epidemic.
