Domesticated for human consumption 3 to 4 thousand years ago by the Andean peoples, the Quinoa, regarded by the Incas as the "mother of all grains”, has seen a rising popularity in recent years. Using a web-based platform supported by IICD, Peruvian producers are improving the production and marketing of their organic quinoa. When it’s time to leave the stage… Nearly 20 years after our foundation, we announce today that IICD will cease operations in The Hague. Our ongoing activities will be carried on by our partners who represent IICD’s success in bringing people, technology and development closer together. We proudly introduce IICD’s legacy website and digital network which we hope will continue bringing people together to share experiences and broker collaborations into the future. www.iicd.org

Our State of 2015 Report is now available for free download online. The report finds that Broadband Internet is failing to reach those who could benefit most, with Internet access reaching near-saturation in the world’s rich nations but not advancing fast enough to benefit the billions of people living in the developing world.

Released today just ahead of the forthcoming SDG Summit in New York, the report reveals that 57% of the world’s people remain offline and unable to take advantage of the enormous economic and social benefits the Internet can offer. Access to information and communication technologies, particularly broadband Internet, has the potential to serve as a major accelerator of development, with the importance of ICT connectivity specifically recognized in the new UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Proud to see that AFYA Connect4Change LakeZone’s contributions to the national SMS campaign 'Wazazi Nipendeni' ('Parents Love Me' in Swahili) have been fruitful. The campaign has reached over 125,000 pregnant women in remote areas of Tanzania, who receive health information via text messages. AfyaC4C has organised orientation workshops in 14 dispensaries, 2 health centres and 1 hospital in the Sengerema and Bariadi Districts. Altogether AfyaC4C has trained 150 health professionals on maternal healthcare and how to register new users.

When Halima Rahim became a mother for the first time, friends and acquaintances in Tanzania's commercial capital, Dar Es Salaam, were quick to offer advice and help.

Today is ! “New technologies, including mobile telephones, also offer fresh opportunities for literacy for all. We must invest more, and I appeal to all Members States and all our partners to redouble our efforts – political and financial – to ensure that literacy is fully recognized as one of the most powerful accelerators of sustainable development." - UNESCO Director-General

The use of ICTs has proved to be of great value to increase outreach, accessibility and quality of health services and community health programmes. A recent World Health Organization (WHO) and International Telecommunication Union report demonstrates the vital role that ICTs are playing today in saving the lives of some of the most vulnerable populations around the world. But what makes ICTs particularly beneficial when used to strengthen Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) programmes? IICD and C4C have worked with SEND - GHANA to develop ICT tools to enhance their participatory M&E of Government of Ghana's pro-poor health policies. These tools have enabled district citizens monitoring committees (DCMCs) to increase awareness of, and access to, financial support for people with disabilities. Early findings from research just being concluded indicate that SEND's use of ICT increases the volumes of data collected and the speed of analysis, as well as the motivation of the volunteers of the DCMCs to conduct such important research activities.
If this alone is not enough reason to praise SEND’s work, wait until you read Felicia’s story and how things have changed for persons with disabilities who did not have access to funds due to mismanagement.

Felicia is in her final year at the Okuapeman Senior High School in Akropong in Ghana’s Eastern Region. She is blind. Her mother works as a food vendor and was
