In this week’s instalment of , we solved the of ! While this might have been -Prize-winning 50 years ago, today the process is rather
simple, requiring little more than a basic computer and an internet connection. Discover how we managed to 3D print our own little Lysozyme, and find out how the of Google performed against the tried-and-tested, but painstaking crystallographic methods.
Lysozyme contributed directly to our understanding of the structure-function relationship of proteins. It was the first solved structure that established the concept that the 3D shape of a protein was the key determinant of its function.

Sir. William Bragg and Sir. Lawrence Bragg are not the only father-son duo ever to have been awarded the Nobel Prize - Lawrence held the record as the youngest ever awardee for 99 years! This award was for their work on X-Ray crystallography, a scientific technique that enables us to reveal the 3D shape of molecules by the way in which a crystal diffracts X-Rays. Since then a further 28 Nobel Prizes have been awarded for discoveries made using this exact technique.
In 1965 Lawrence Bragg’s research group used this approach to uncover the structure of Lysozyme. This marked the first-ever enzyme (and only the third protein) to have its 3D structure solved, opening entirely new avenues of understanding of the structure-function relationship of proteins. In this week’s instalment of our series, we discover more about this fascinating discovery, read it here.
Sir. William Bragg and Sir. Lawrence Bragg shared the Nobel Prize in 1915 for their work on analysing crystal structures using X-Rays.

Our next episode celebrating the 100 year anniversary of Lysozyme’s discovery begins this week. Here we will uncover the fascinating involvement of Lysozyme in multiple Nobel Prizes and some of the new properties of this enzyme that are still being uncovered to this day. From generating electricity from tears to opening a new understanding of the relationship between protein shape and function and beyond.
To most of us, if at least those reading, I hope, Lysozyme is best known as a potent, natural antimicrobial. This is its primary purpose for the hen's egg, making the egg-white a formidable barrier to invading micro-organisms.

Our series celebrating 100 Years of Lysozyme continues this week with the establishment of Italian manufacture of Lysozyme by SPA. Click here to read the story in full:
24th May 1947 saw the establishment of SPA (Società Prodotti Antibiotici) by Pharmacologist Dr. Rodolfo Ferrari and microbiologist Carlo Callerio. Now Italy had its own, domestic Penicillin.

Our celebration of the 100 year anniversary of Lysozyme’s discovery continues. This week we uncover how the wonder-drug arrives on Italian shores for the first time during . A mere four years later does Italian manufacture begin, with the founding of SPA by Dr.Rodolfo Ferrari. Follow this fascinating story on our webpage
.
The death of their first trial patient through insufficient supply of Penicillin drove Florey, Chain, and their research assistant Heatley, forward with inspired momentum. Increasing production was an absolute necessity.

We continue with our discovery of Lysozyme’s 100-year history this week with the release of the first instalment of episode 2. Click here: LINK to discover how Bioseutica group first came to manufacture Lysozyme, a story that begins with Alexander Fleming’s second, yet more famous discovery Penicillin.

Italy, 1947 We are in its second year as a Republic. The constituent assembly has written and voted to accept the new constitution, and president Alcide de Gasperi has formed a new government. The signing of the Paris peace treaty has formally ended all hostility between Italy and the former allies,...

Not only tasty, but immune boosting? An Australian study revealed exciting immunity-boosting increases in levels in athletes consuming Flucoidans, naturally occurring brown compounds
Time to put seaweed back on the menu? Okinawans, famous for their long lives, would agree, having eaten brown seaweed for generations.
Fucoidans are bioactive compounds found naturally in brown seaweeds. Their role in nature is to protect the seaweed plant against a range of stresses. The same protective benefits of fucoidans that are of value to the seaweed plant have sparked interest in both human and animal health.

Blood, spit, and tears. In this week’s instalment of our series celebrating ’s 100 year history, we discover the remarkable range of substances for which has made use of this potent .
Fleming’s shyness, his being, “not a great lecturer” as acknowledged by Allison, may in part account for the poor reception received at the first reading of the initial paper describing lysozyme.
