🌍 No Dia Mundial da Diabetes apresentamos o trabalho desenvolvido na Guiné-Bissau por Eugénia Carvalho, investigadora principal e líder do grupo de investigação Obesidade, Diabetes e Complicações do CNC-UC/CiBB.
Eugénia iniciou o seu trabalho no país em 2020, onde passa agora três meses por ano a ajudar a combater a doença. Desde então, a investigadora implementou o primeiro grande rastreio nacional de diabetes na Guiné-Bissau e iniciou a realização de ensaios clínicos para estudar no país o efeito protetor da vacina BCG na diabetes.
O objetivo de Eugénia Carvalho é agora sensibilizar a população da Guiné-Bissau para a doença e promover um novo programa de rastreio para mulheres grávidas, contribuindo para o combate da mortalidade materna e infantil no país, entre as mais elevadas do mundo.
🫴O trabalho desenvolvido por Eugénia Carvalho tem sido realizado com o apoio de instituições como Camões, I.P., Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Fundación "la Caixa", European Association for the Study of Diabetes e a Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).

🌍 On World Diabetes Day we are presenting the work carried out in Guinea-Bissau by Eugénia Carvalho, principal investigator and leader of the Obesity, Diabetes, and Complications research group at CNC-UC/CiBB.
Eugénia started her work in the country in 2020, where she implemented the first major national screening for diabetes in Guinea-Bissau and started clinical trials to study the protective effect of the BCG vaccine on diabetes in the country.
Eugénia Carvalho's goal is now to raise awareness among the population of Guinea-Bissau and promoting a new screening program for pregnant women. This will help combat maternal and infant mortality in the country, among the highest in the world.
