On National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day ( ), we highlight a critical gap in the HIV response:
Young people living with HIV are the least likely of any age group to be retained in care or achieve viral suppression.

While AIDS-related mortality has declined overall, it remains disproportionately high among adolescents. In parts of the world, AIDS is still the leading cause of death among adolescents, and adolescent girls are nearly six times more likely to acquire HIV than boys.

Closing this gap requires:
• Increasing empathy and reducing stigma
• Supporting policies that enable access to HIV prevention, treatment, and care
• Expanding access to PrEP and PEP
• Advancing comprehensive, evidence-based education
• Addressing legal and systemic barriers

As we mark this day, we also look ahead to the 10th edition of the International Workshop on Adolescence, SRHR & HIV 2026.

We invite contributions on topics including adolescent mental health, SRHR, HIV prevention and treatment, digital health, policy and rights, and more.

On World TB Day, we are reminded that remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases — yet one that is preventable, treatable, and curable.

Despite progress, major challenges remain: delayed diagnosis, drug resistance, gaps in access to care, and the unique vulnerabilities of populations such as children and pregnant women.

Addressing these challenges requires solutions led by countries and powered by people, supported by collaboration, research, and shared knowledge.

As part of this effort, we are bringing together experts at our upcoming Conference on Innovations in Tuberculosis, held as a pre-meeting to the 20th INTEREST Conference.

The 18th International Workshop on Pediatrics & HIV 2026
24-25 July 2026
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Workshop aims at:
• Enhancing communication and encouraging collaboration between junior and senior investigators, north and south, and academia, governmental public health agencies, and industry to promote advances in HIV prevention and care in children, adolescents and families.

• Disseminating knowledge and data exchanged by workshop participants beyond the audience of the live event through posting of all presentations on the meeting website, thus maximizing the impact of the meeting by reaching the whole HIV research community.

• Providing updates on the latest research on new pediatric antiretroviral drugs and treatment and prevention strategies in children and adolescents. - Understanding how to optimize recognition and treatment of advanced HIV disease in children and adolescents. Providing updates on new strategies for HIV prevention in children, adolescents and pregnant women, including long-acting antiretroviral agents and HIV vaccines.

• Evaluating effectiveness of and gaps in programs for the prevention of perinatal HIV transmission and interventions to improve such programs, including evaluation of early infant diagnosis in the current ART era.

• Sharing results of implementation science research on how to optimally implement programs for prevention or treatment of HIV in infants, children, adolescents and pregnant women in developing countries. Understanding the complications of long-term HIV infection and its therapy, to enable improved management of HIV in children and adolescents. Providing update on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of coinfections, such as tuberculosis and hepatitis C, in children and adolescents.
