Receiving can be challenging when early relationships required us to give in order to stay connected.
If you learned to stay connected by managing others’ needs or by attempting to not have your own, receiving support may feel uncomfortable at first. It can feel exposing or vulnerable, even when part of you longs for it.
This isn’t a sign that anything is wrong. It reflects how you adapted in order to maintain connection when you were a child.
As you explore new relational experiences, allowing yourself to receive from others can become more accessible. It can take time to trust a different way of being—one where connection doesn’t depend on caretaking and where your needs have a place in the relationship, too.
