We are proud to present our Nutritional guidebook for MS. This collects nutritional advice from scientific literature and MS organisations. We hope this is the start of a good source for nutritional guidance in MS and encourage your feedback.

New work with propionate has shown neuroprotection and remyelination in an animal model of a de-myelinating disease similar to MS. These studies are performed by feeding with propionate but the nerve cells are then cultured separately and measured for response. This means the results are promising but they need testing in humans and the size of effect isnt known. So there is still a way to go, but this latest paper is another small step forward.

In inflammatory neuropathies, oxidative stress results in neuronal and Schwann cell (SC) death promoting early neurodegeneration and clinical disab...

Ceventrix works via the gut-brain axis and its been a busy month for research in MS and the gut-brain axis. In Denmark researchers found specific changes in gut bacteria related to MS disease, and disease activity supporting a strong role of gut bacteria in MS, Meanwhile an american review promotes using bacterial metabolites against MS, for example propionate - a great support of Ceventrix. This review gives a detailed description of how propionate works and also discusses other important nutrients. This is supported by a second review of gut bacterial activity in MS, again from the US.
Is there scientific consensus of the role of the gut-brain axis in MS. We would say yes. Ceventrix is the first product directed to the gut-brain axis.

God Jul!

As the Christmas holidays approach, we wish you all a wonderful time. We know that each of you has a unique story, each with its own ups and downs. Our meetings with the MS community has been for us a source of inspiration in strength and good spirit, and we offer a big thanks to those who have talked to us.

Whatever your circumstances; cherish the good times this Christmas, don´t worry if everything isnt perfect, and don´t apologise for any short fallings. Our bodies will set up challenges (an understatement maybe!) and the world outside is doing its best to drag us down. But stay strong. Listen to the voices that give you energy, those you love, and we look forward to gaining our strength and inspiration from more of you in 2023.

Happy Christmas.

ECTRIMS Hub reports on the importance of the blood brain barrier in MS. This barrier is normally the gatekeeper for the brain, deciding what comes in and out. During MS (and Parkinsons) the integrity of the barrier breaks down and inflammatory immune cells can easily slip through, causing havoc. Work performed at the University of Utah shows that restoring the barrier can actually allow the nerve cells to repair (in rats).

There are several cell and animal studies supporting a role of propionate in maintaining a healthy blood brain barrier in MS models, but the work is still in its early days and more research in humans is needed to confirm this activity. The work by Utah shows that drugs and nutrients targeting the blood brain barrier is a new therapeutic strategy against several neurological diseases.

New University of Utah Health research suggests an alternative therapeutic strategy for multiple sclerosis: restabilizing a natural barricade—the blood-CNS barrier

Europe´s medical conference for MS, ECTRIMS is now underway in Amsterdam. Over the next few days we will report highlights from the meeting.

But first an interesting look at ECTRIMS Hub - where hot news is reported. Lifestyle choices are recognised as important and the gut bacteria (microbiome) is considered an external factor in MS development. Interestingly, one report describes not only gut microbiome but also the oral (mouth) microbiome as important and other research suggests the inflammatory gut might not only affect MS but also depression. It shows that MS is multifactorial and affects people in different ways and its going to get more complex as we learn more.

The potential influence of diet and lifestyle on quality of life for individuals with MS has received considerable focus within the MS and neurological research community. Recently, in the ECTRIMS Hub, we noted how studies in the Netherlands [1] and Italy [2] demonstrated physical and mental health....

Fighting MS on all fronts is important for motivation, strength, and a strong body and mind. For those looking for an holistic approach we recommend "Overcoming MS" aka OMS. This UK charity guides you through diet, exercise, meditation and medication. The site is a strong source of information and they have local gatherings known as circles. We love the positive energy of this site and their philosophy. Although based in the UK, they have international reach.
Do you have experience of OMS or other similar offerings?

At Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis (OMS) we are committed to improving the lives of people with MS through a scientific diet and lifestyle recovery program.

We are changing our page name from "Ceventrix" to "Nutrition in Multiple Sclerosis".
This is to reflect our mission to supply scientifically supported nutritional advice for those with MS. The battle against MS will be fought on many sides, the emotional, medicinal, physical, and nutritional. They are all important. Here, we want to focus on the nutritional and hope this can be of help.

Summer sun and MS.
We know that sunshine makes Vitamin D, which helps against MS. Research this year supports this. Paediatric (childhood) MS was followed and showed a strong reduction in MS in those with more than 30 minutes daily outdoor exposure (PMID: 34880094). A Swedish study showed the same - that low sun exposure multiplied the likelihood of MS after infection with Ebstein-Barr virus (PMID: 34435414).
Some details are fuzzy but a new, large study from June 2022 also points to sun exposure relating to MS severity (PMID: 35410900).
Bottom-line: Go out and enjoy the sun, use sun block, have a great summer.

Recognising a true opportunity from a scam.

We are all exposed to sensational, misleading or false information. Facebook is one of the worst arenas and recognising what is true and what is fiction is becoming harder.
We at DAHRT want to promote research driven products. This means we need to know how it works (called a mechanism of action) and if it works (via clinical studies).

To find out if any company is serious you should make demands. We encourage you to be critical. Ask questions, send questions to us, debate and if you don´t understand the science we can send an independent laymans report to you. Science is not always clear and straightforward and we are happy to discuss what it means, the limitations and the potential - and in several languages - in English, Norwegian or Danish.
